Thousands of pounds worth of Christmas gifts being sent from the UK to Ascension Island, part of the South Atlantic British territory St Helena, have been sent by the Royal Mail to Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay.
Ascension Island's largest settlement is Georgetown, and the gifts sent here arrived in Georgetown, Guyana instead. "We apologise that mail to customers in Ascension did not arrive in time for Christmas," the Royal Mail said in a statement.
Islander Paul Knowles said he didn't expect the gifts to arrive at all now, but added: "It would be nice if it did." The Royal Mail has said that the gifts will still arrive, but due to the rarity of flights it could take some time yet.
