Japan's Constitution Prohibits Protecting U.S. from Missile Attacks

Japan's missile defense system, to become operational in fiscal 2007, cannot be used to protect other countries, including the USA, from whom they are buying the missile system.

Intercepting hostile missile attacks that are heading towards an allied country is considered collective-defense, which the Japanese interpret as violating their war-free Constitution. Earlier policy allowed for destroying any passing missiles.

The planned defense system will only target missiles that are heading towards Japan, however missiles that are passing through their territory towards an unknown destination will be shot down, say Japan's Defense Agency officials.

US has it's on protection system
obviously we do not need Japan to protect us.
 by: TOBYKIETH     01/10/2005 09:16 PM
  granted...
it doesn't work, but the US does have its own missile defense. that, and it won't stop a suitcase-nuke or shipping-container nuke or any other kind of hidden weapon, and it's failed most of the tests. but come hell or high water, we've got ourselves some missile defense.
oh, and any passing missiles could be headed towards an unknown destination. the system we're selling to japan is unofficially protecting us as well.

  ummm...
suit case nuke is not a missle. When has a missle landed on US soil..wasn't it like Pearl Harbor. The US is the safest nation in the world.

"The US is the safest nation in the world."
hmm yeah right, no terrorists have ever caused any loss of life on US soil??

Short memory Toby?

Safe Yes - Missle Defense No
And everyone that was involved in the attak entered legally and all the roundups resulted in no convictions and extreme loss of liberties.

"These are rough problems, terrible problems… But they
don’t go away by destroying their critics. They don’t
vanish by sending men to jail. They never did and they
never will." William Kunstler, Closing Arguments at the Trial of the Chicago 8 charged with causing riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention, all were found not guilty of that charge.

  I am not saying
we have never been attacked by terrorist. I know we have! Given how most all groups around the world hate us and the amount of attacks we have had...we are safe. Yep. Safe.
 by: TOBYKIETH     01/10/2005 11:29 PM
  "Safe, yup safe" :-D
Keep telling yourself that lol, unless there's a serious change in attitude you will always be exposed to danger than any country will ever be. The Russians have already cracked your missile defence technology, not too long until everyone buys that capability. Anyway, stepping up security, having national warning signs, metal detectors in public places and suspecting anyone and everyone of being a terrorist does not tell the world you are safe, I would say far from it. : D

  This is stupid
Really the cost does not warrant the means!

Really how many terroists have access to large scale rockets, like cruise missles or anything like that, which could warrant this behavior it is not like the soviets are around anymore.

Anyway it is not like america can guard itself easyly anyway.

I guess this system or sam sites with gps. Can you really see these defensive points being more than 200+ km together?

  I think they are safe....
After all they are only using this as an excuse to put in a police state.

Now in three years time they won't be safe.... from their own government....

btw : That goes for the UK too..... In case you are unsure....

  North Korea
is the big concern relavent to Japan/US concerns about missile attacks. North Korean missiles can hit Guam or Hawaii, and those would track over Japan.

However, who knows who else might want to chuck some missles at the US in the future?

 by: theironboard     01/11/2005 03:07 PM
  @si182uk
you can buy nuclear weapons for as little as $50m and terrorists got more money then that. + if you buy some many nukes you get one free :D
 by: wingedpuma1   01/11/2005 05:43 PM
  if it is so easy
to attain nukes and use them against the US...why hasn't it happened...LOL

  Know why we're so safe?
Terrorists can attack anyone, they've already proved that. As of yet, the U.S. does seem to be safer from terrorist attacks as there have been none here for a few years. Outside of terrorist attacks, the U.S. is the safest place to live. The closet anyone got to bring war to our door is pearl habor. Anyone meaning an actual country or army...like I said, terrorists can attack anyone. So yes, Toby is right, America is the safest place on earth, because aside from terrorists (who can attack anyone) no one is bring war to our door.

 bringing, bringing
 by: Gnaglor     01/11/2005 07:59 PM
  @Gnaglor
Do you think there are only 2 places in the world, the Middle East and the USA? Of the two, sure, the USA is safer, but it's far from the safest place.

There are hundreds of countries free of war AND not terror targets, and it's people like you that keep America as unsafe as it is.

What, noone has ever nuked the US so that makes it safe? Maybe its because other countries have more regard for life than the US. Even in defence they know that not the whole country is to blame - the US hasn't learned yet.

I feel mush safer living in a country I know hasn't used a nuke in an act of war against a city of innocent people.

Reply to "Know why we're so safe?"
Well your biggest enemy are yourselves. A gun crazed country where homicides are all too common. And then there's the wonderful war on terror, which will only create more of it.

  there's no place like home
I know that the Swedes feel particularly smug... um, er... I mean... SAFE over the fact that Osama actually mentioned their country by name as a place where will be no attacks against non-Muslims.

However, given the rise of the Muslim population in that country, I wouldn't feel so sure.

The whole world is paranoid and feels unsafe right now. What can we do?

Turn up the volume on the television, and hope nobody drops a bomb on you...

"The US is the safest nation in the world"
lol.. well said.. notice how every comment after Toby's had something to say about the above line? Imagine how boring SN would be without him.

Anyway, I still have to dispute it. I won't go into which country is the SAFEST.. but I will say Canada is much safer than the US. We have the ultimate missile defense system. Lol, its based completely on the principle that no one wants to missile us. As long as we have such a big target to the south of us pissing off the world, I'd say we're pretty safe.

As for attacks on our soil, we've had even less than the US. I believe the only one came from the US in fact. And we owned you guys in that one. Oh, and we've had terrorist attacks too, but they don't really compare in scale. So, Toby, do you still claim to be "safest"?

 by: acg   01/12/2005 05:59 PM
  Just because people don't
want to attack you, doesn't make you safe. The US is safe because anyone outside of terrorists can not attack us even if they wanted to. If they did, unless they are terrorists, they would be crushed. So I reiterate, the US is the safest place in the world. Canada and Sweden might be safe because no one wants to attack, but you get another person like Adolf, or hell another person like Saddam, who comes knocking on your door, then we'll see who's safe. (Not being attacked does not equate to you being safe.)

  Internal threats greatest danger

As with any nation or country, the greatest threat is always an internal one.
The most recent example is the narrow hair's breadth escape we made from electing loose cannon John [s]Kerry! Next, there's Dame Hillary on the event horizon. Oh my!

 by: Luhker     01/13/2005 07:36 PM
  Both...
the US and the rest of the world would be safer without Bush behind the wheel.
The results are just more bloodshed, not more safety.

Russia is the safest contry in the world
It has no real enemies except chechnya and if you don't live there or near there you are fine. They have a properly working missile defence system and the sheer size of russia means it is easier to hide
 by: tiggyfiggy   01/17/2005 03:43 PM
  Don't think...
any country at war could be in a safest list.
 by: Kaleid   01/17/2005 04:15 PM
  @acg
I wouldn't be so sure that no one wants to launch a few missles at you. After all you are responsible for Celine Dion.
