Britain Sending Extra Troops to Iraq

British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon has announced that Britain will be sending 400 extra UK troops to Iraq ahead of national elections to be held there at the end of this month. The troops will be based for a “limited period.”

The soldiers, from the 1st Battalion Royal Highland Fusiliers, will be based in south eastern Iraq and will help control the possible insurgent violence before the election. Three British citizens were killed by insurgents this week.

Hoon insisted however, that "There are no plans whatsoever for British forces to operate outside their current area of operations."
