Producers of the reality series "The Simple Life" offered the Buena Regional School District in rural New Jersey $5,000 if it let Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie work as substitute teachers and cafeteria workers at its middle school.
The district initially was okay with the idea until some parents complained that Paris Hilton was not a good role model, given the X rated video of her circulating on the internet. 340 parents consented and 34 parents objected to the filming.
The theme of the next "Simple Life" is to have Paris and Nicole travel around the country doing internships. The Buena school district is 30 miles west of Atlantic City.
"340 parents consented and 34 parents objected to the filming."
340 = 34 x 10.
Am I the only person who sees a problem here?
A few people complain enough and they get the victory, while the other 340 are stuck. I've seen this in many places, and all around I'd have to say that apathy is allowing them to win.
The 340 that consented need to fight this. Not necessarily because Paris Hilton should be in their school, but perhaps because it was something they thought would good, funny, interesting, etc etc and now it was stolen away by 10x fewer people. If nothing else, it'll set a precedent that the few whiners out there can't get what they want by doing what they do best.
I don't think this is like politics and it is judged by a vote. If 10 parents have good solid reasons why its a bad idea and 100 think its "cool" then I would go with the 10.
Is not the issue. Filming in and around school property is actually quite difficult. In order for it to happen, EVERY child present that day MUST have signed the appropriate waivers and forms, even if they don't appear. I remember when I was in elementry school this news network wanted to interview our principle outside of the school. Not one student could be seen in the video but every student needed to have signed the waiver. Schools are finicky with these things, one parent not agreeing would mean a no go. Which is quite rediculous really but what can be done?
and lapsed responsibility. Everyone's so worried about the most miniscule of risks to their kids, their school, their sensibilities. If the 10% can always overrule the 90%, and the vocal minority always wins, then every special interest group gets their way. Wait a minute..... isn't it already that way all the time in N America now?
I'd guess that the 340 who voted for it mostly took the attitude of "yeah, fine, whatever" rather than saying "YES! we must do this for our children's future!" So they probably weren't so upset at them not coming.. maybe I'm wrong.. but this makes most sense to me.
This happened about a half hour away from me, and there was more to the story than I see here. First, parents were concerned that Paris and her chimp would mock the school, the kids, and the district, the way they mock everyone else on their crap show. Secondly, not even all of the kids were for it. A local paper had a student write in stating that she thought Paris was a spoiled rich piece of trash, and that she and her friends weren't interested at all in the visit. Thirdly, the board's decision was put forth secretly in a few ways, and despite permission slips, the students who decided not to attend during those days would be marked as "unexcused" in their absence. A small point, but in essence the school would be punishing those who decided not to attend. In any case, it wasn't just "34 parents" who were opposed to this. Students did as well, and for a few other reasons than just "Paris isn't a good role model."
As for "tyranny of the minority," one could claim that's the same thing homosexuals are achieving by silencing those who don't see things the way they do by claiming opposing views are "hate speech" or something else just as nonsensical. Of course, liberals would offer excuses to that...
There are some great points on both sides here. Maybe a compromise would be to do the shoot on the weekend. Then those kids and teachers that wanted to attend could do so and those that object could stay home. No harm no foul.
All that said I do agree that Paris Hilton has no place in a school. Her parents should be ashamed of themselves. They have produced a vain retarded model with no common sense and spoiled the crap out of her. Remember when her boyfriend beat her up a few months back. That should have been a wake up call for Paris. Why not speak out and stand up for women’s rights? All she does is whore about on TV and spend money. I just wish I had a dollar for every time she admired herself in the mirror. I don’t even think the bag of bones is good looking, and any good looks she might have are overshadowed by her stupidity. Now Nicole Ricci, that’s one hot chick.
