Ali G Character Escorted From Angry Rodeo Crowd

Spectators at a rodeo in Salem, Virginia were unhappy when "Boraq Sagdiyev" launched into a diatribe about the war against terrorism instead of singing the National Anthem. It turns out that "Boraq" is one of comedian Ali G's alter egos.

"Boraq" told the crowd: "I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards...And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq." He then sang what he said was Kazakhstan's national anthem.

"Boraq" ended with a butchered version of the Star Spangled Banner with the words "your home in the grave" ending it. The owner of the rodeo says he feared for the man's life so "Boraq" was escorted from a booing crowd that was flipping him off.

  silly dumb dumb!

Ali G should stick to doing jokes about hashish-- at least there he knows what he's talking about.

I've been amazed at some of the stuff he has done, but if he's trying to make a political statement then he's out of his league. (Still, I'd love to see this event if it's broadcasted.)

Why didn't he do something like protest the cruelty to animals instead?

Further evidence that those damn yanks just don't appreciate irony ;)

  further proof

that he's dumb as a stump... piss off a whole crowd full of redneck rodeo fans?? About the only dumber thing he could've done was to pull the same stunt in front of NASCAR fans.. he's lucky he made it out of there alive..

  You do understand the definition...

...of comedy, don't you?

He's not stupid at all. Sasha went to Cambridge and graduated with honours, went on to do his Phd, but droped it in the name of comedy.

It does seem though in the episodes where he went to the US, they all took him so seriously.

  Yup

His type of ironic comedy goes over far too many heads for my liking. Its like when he sang a song which was filmed on the streets of London which appeared to be taking the piss out of Jews. People complained until they learned that he is actually Jewish himself.

What he did in Salem was not only brave (he knew exactly what he was doing and exactly what reaction he would get) but also very original, which is what all good comedy has to be. Just because he out-rednecked the rednecks doesn't make him a dumb person. Quite the opposite. Smell the frikkin' coffee, America.

doesn't matter where he went to college

just because you're educated does not preclude you from doing stupid things.. look at Shaq in the NBA, he's got a college degree, does that automatically make him smart? Hell, Nicole Richie has a college degree and she's the second dumbest person on the earth..

 by: sjava     01/12/2005 03:53 PM
  While...

he may not be stupid... this stunt is certainly ill-advised. He's lucky all they did is boo and give him the finger. Them rednecks is crazy, I reckon.

 by: erasedgod   01/12/2005 04:19 PM
yep. What a smart boy he is.

Rosanne Barr already desecrated the National Anthem, so that's been done. Pissing off rodeo fans-- it's been done. Pissing off rednecks in general, not hard to do at all...

It's just offensive, and more anti-American stuff that won't make anyone seriously ponder their national identity or war-policies. No big deal to me, personally. He is, by far, not the most original brilliant comedian to come outta England.

Did somebody say he doped out of his graduate studies? haha. Having a univesity degree means nothing anyway.

But he does have some balls, and he almost lost them in North Carolina. If he had died from his performance, now that would've been truly original....

  Shaq

graduated in general studies...What the hell is that supposed to mean? Studying general things, or studying in general?

Even though prestige is very much overated, in my opinion, I think making it into one of the worlds top unis accounts for something.

  as a North Carolina native...

I would say he was in no real danger, and some of you have suggested. Contrary to what seems to be popular belief, North Carolina is not very redneck compared to any state below us. Unless you go to a country themed bar, you aren't going to see anyone with cowboy hats, tight jeans, or anything else that makes them look any different from everyone else in the US. North Carolina is host to many Wold Headquarters for huge international businesses, including, but not limited to IBM and Cisco Systems. So please watch the redneck comments.

North Carolina is also very polarized on the issues facing America today, with only slightly more than %50 voting for bush in the last election. so if anything i would say he missed his target, and should have tried a state where more people would have gotten angry with him.

One last thing, i know the source says Salem, but as a native I'm not aware of any city/town in North Carolina called Salem... though we do have a Winston Salem.

Shaq's degree is in General Studies, he also minored in Political Science.. that and $1.25 can get him a cup of coffee, it's only a step above a degree in philosophy..

getting into prestigious schools doesn't mean anything anymore with the advent of Affirmative Action, at least in the US, not sure if the UK has the same nonsense.. an ex-gf of mine got into an excellent engineering school here.. her grades and SAT's would not have been high enough, but she's female and hispanic, so she met criteria that the school was looking for to fill it's Affirmative Action quotas..

why Americans can't have a laugh at their own expense from time to time. I realize they pride themselves on their arrogance, but come on.. lighten up

  As a Virginia Native... @newmilpann

If there are rednecks in Virginia, then there sure as heck are some in North Carolina. At least he didn't try this stunt in Texas. For sure, he would now be sporting bullet-holes.

Can't limit my comments about rednecks, nope. Sorry. However, now that I live in Europe I have been redirecting my tounge-in-cheek comments towards several other distinctive classes of white-trash.

Salem is a 'city' next to Roanoke (very close together so that they have really merged); Roanoke isthe city in which the article originated. It's just west of the Blue Ridge, easily located on I-81.

I want to see Ali G's college transcripts.

i live in virginia.. and the northern parts of virginia (suburbs of DC) where i live are mostly liberal and aren't redneck at all. The southern part is which is where salem is.. is all conservative but i doubt any of em are redneck enough to shoot him.

I was thinking "Lost Colony" and that's why I got the state wrong. And I actually visited the historic site. ;)

  Didn't notice anyone mention...

but the characters name is "Borat Sagdiyev" not "Boraq" as reported.

  Northern Virginia

Northern Virginia doesn't count as being in The South. It gets all the taxpayer advantages in Virginia while the rest of the state is left to hang. Since Washington D.C. is right up there many of the people that work in DC live in Northern Virginia. As soon as you get about a half hour away it starts turning into farmland (which is rapidly disappearing). The counties farthest to the South are really hurting economically since the tobacco industry is shrinking. Meanwhile, all people around the beltway in DC enjoy proper education funding, roads, and job opportunities.

(and Holy Crapola! I've been to the Salem Civic Center where the Rodeo Incident took place. Rodeos are very rare in Virginia, but NASCAR is quite popular. I thought the original posting said N. Carolina so I didn't catch it.)

..and all that suing is BS.

We had an American student here try to sue a uni because they didn't pass him. He got laughed out of court.

  Ali G Kicks Ass

he once went to a noce redneck howdown, or a square dance, pretnding to be gay. (if he is or not is besides the point.) Then he found one of the guys there and tried to hit on him, making a scene and overall attempting to "get into his pants"

Needless to say it annoyed some people.

If you haven't seen his show, you should.

I thought he was Borat too but I just copied Boraq from the original source so people wouldn't complain.

  Not redneck enough to shoot?

Quote from swedish paper (not leftist):
"-Had he stayed a few minutes longer I think I might've shot him, says Robynn Jaymes, who was in the audience, to New York Post."

Crazy people...
