Eight-Organ Transplant Baby Dies a Year On

Alessia Di Matteo has died at the age of 18-months. The little girl was born with congenital smooth muscle disorder. The condition, fatal without treatment, doesn't allow the stomach, intestines or kidneys to work properly.

Alessia made the headlines last year when she underwent a 12 hour operation to replace 8 of her internal organs, liver, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, spleen and two kidneys. The liver was later replaced again.

Alessia was transferred from a Florida clinic last month to a hospital in her home town of Genoa, Italy in a extremely serious condition.

  Both heroic and sad

The surgeons made an heroic effort to give the girl some hope for a life, but it's sad that it was so very short. Perhaps her parents will be comforted by some few precious memories?

Surgery is always trauma to the body, and how much more so for an infant? There is still much to be learned about transplanting organs after many decades.

  Really..

Anyone who couldn't forsee major major problems occuring after a 6-month-old baby has 8 organs replaced is extremely short sighted.
Makes you wonder if the surgeons involved just used the baby as an experiment, and didn't inform the parents that it would be better not to prolong the child's suffering. It's just amazing that she lasted a year.

  Poor baby :'(

She's better off dead, no doubt the poor thing was in agony as her organs decided to shut down one at a time etc etc

Some times its just better to let kid die. I saw one absolutely heartbreaking documentary and it drove me to tears, it really did i was crying with my fianceé when we watched it. A little girl was caught in a house fire when she was about 18 months old, but was rescued after being badly badly burned, she had to be resuscitated about a dozen times.

And she was burnt so badly, her hands melted off, and so did her face and hair, and 4 years on this poor little child was running around, with a face like a melted barbie doll, and stumps for hands.

And I just thought how selfish were the parents, for wanting that child to pull through and not letting her die so she could rest in peace. And i say they were selfish because they obviously didnt want to lose their child but i think that was happening for the wrong reasons...

I have to agree with you 100%. Sounds like someone trying to get their name into the latest medical journal. We have the decency to let our pets die gracefully but a child is put on display. I think these parents and surgeons should be ashamed of themselves. Even if this child did live her life would have been a living Hell.

  8 wasted?

Heh, I don't mean to come off as jerk but... Wow, that's a waste of 8 organs. Really though, what kind of live would that kid have lived? Sometimes there's a good reason the body's dieing... Or something. I haven't slept yet.
