Baseball Players and Owners Set Against Steroid Use

Thursday Major League Baseball players and owners revealed a tough program which includes penalties for first-time use of steroids to enhance player performance. Also established were year-round random tests.

Penalties will increase with each positive test: 10-, 30- and 60-day suspensions. A fourth test failure will mean a one year ban, and the fifth offense will be subject to specific discipline by the MLB commissioner.

Commissioner Bud Selig said:
"I've been saying for some time that my goal for this industry is zero tolerance regarding steroids."

  Until this point, ...
... the player's union has stymied ALL drug testing! Like JFURY said, it's a beginning!

  it's definitely
a LOT better than the previous "testing" plan they had last year which was a joke... I'd still like to see the testing done more often and random and unannounced, but maybe someday we'll get there...

  I wish
Law enforcement around here had a "0 tolerance" effect. =X

lol? oh man, you couldnt make it up
Zero tolerance but you're basically ok if you only get caught three times?

Should be a ONE STRIKE rule, if you're caught with steroids, bang, game over baby, enjoy lecturing kids in school!

  The...
players union must be being paid by the drug dealers.

  hmm
really there are worse things than steroids, hell there was probably some type of steroids that we didnt know about back in the days of Ruth, Mantle and Ted Williams, i'm not accusing them of taking them but also i am not saying their clean.

i wonder if this drug using just not steroids as Drugs kill careers and end life short for good players, i'm not saying steroids dont as they could but Drugs seem worse and i know many players do them.

but atleast this is something, i dont think its a good policy but its a start, i think if you use steroids you should be banned from baseball, and even if i found out my favorite player used steroids i will still agree, but as thats Ryne Sandberg i dont see him cheating.

  There ARE worse things,
but people who use them are taking a toll on their bodies:

  nah
back in the days of Ruth and Mantle there were no steroids or any performance enhancing drugs.. these guys weren't in great shape, they didn't lift weights, they smoked, they drank, they ate whatever they wanted... they showed up 2 weeks before the start of the season all outta shape.. what they did, they did on pure talent alone
