The European space probe Huygens, reported earlier here to have entered the atmosphere of Saturnian moon Titan, has touched down upon its surface safely, officials report. The probe is still transmitting long after it would have landed.
Its mission is to gather information that might help scientists better understand how life originated on Earth. So far, it has only told researchers that it made it safely. "We clearly have an engineering success," the mission manager said.
"We are going to work very hard to convert this into a scientific success," he added.
Huygens has already begun experiments with Titan's atmosphere, believed to resemble that of Earth in its youth. Researchers teared up when Huygens landed safely.
