Apple Sues Teen for Exposing its Secrets

Apple Computer is suing Harvard University freshman Nicholas M. Ciarelli who runs the Apple news web site ThinkSecret.com. The company is unhappy that he reported news of their $500 computer back in December.

Ciarelli, who used the alias Nick dePlume on the site, increased the popularity of ThinkSecret.com when he reported that the G4 version of the PowerBook laptop series was coming out a few years back. This made the site popular among Apple users.

In its suit against him, Apple claims: "Defendants' knowing misappropriation and disclosure of Apple's trade secrets constitutes a violation of California law and has caused irreparable harm to Apple." CEO Steve Jobs is famous for advocating secrecy.

  Freedom of speech.

It doesn't look like he is an employee. He then would not have signed a confidentiality agreement. If anything its publicity.
Prove that he got the information illegally then I may listen to Apple. Otherwise his Reports are Conjecture.

Apple, don't risk PR on this guy. Linux-zilla could squish you too!

  Apple the next M$......

BAHaHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
LOL
Oh sh!t did that make me laugh!
Are you kidding?
LOL

If anything it will be a Linux software developer in the form of a major corporation that buys a few Linux destitutions.
MS is here to stay or at least till Gate$ dies or something.
Its extremely unrealistic to think Apple will make that sort of come back.

My god they are almost none existent.

Like I said before they are a great innovator but that’s about it...
Apple was the first to implement everything from DVD burners to PDAs. The list is very long.
But there no MS!

HAHHAAH
are you kidding?

You said apple is almost non-existant.. but you fail to realize they don't only make computers.
Hundresds of kids in every high school now has an ipod / ipod mini made by Apple. Also many college kids and adults have them. I haven't had a day go by without seeing another one.
Some of those people that have ipods are now interested in buying Mac's and that's why they released the Mac Mini.. to convert PC users to Mac users. Lot's of people know the Apple name and they have an extremely active fanbase that support their every move.

Due to the nature of linux and it's licenses... It can never become the next MS but it can become more popular than it.. eventually.

Also, Bill Gates dying won't have any effect on Microsoft, as he doesn't do much now. He's no longer even the CEO, Steve Ballmer is.

Lastly, from the articles I read, they had no idea they were suing a teenager due to the aliases he used.. but they still shouldn't have sued anyone b/c of them posting their secrets. If they wanted secrecy they should enforce stricer NDA's at Apple.

  Yeah,

this seems "petty" on Apple's part. Instead of going after the "messenger" they should be plugging their corporate leaks!!

Wow, Their 1% market share could slip

  Reason number...

2367 for the why I hate apple list.

Apple, I wish you and everything about you would just blow to bits right now.
(Not that i'm slightly anti-apple)

  idiots

What a bunch of idiots they are. I can not see a reason why they have the right to sue him, unless he is a employee of apple and is posting trade secrets. He is just using his ability of free speech to share his information with the rest of the world. If apple is so worrired about it I think they should start a investigation on the inside or maybe ask nicely or offer the kid money for the leak source but not sue him.

  Apple : Think Different?

I sorta think Apple has the right idea. The law suit shouldn't be extreme for the guy. I do agree the company in which he worked for needs to be sued the hell out of. Apple has to make a living and that means keeping secrets until the big day of showing their new product. I dont agree with those thinking Apple is a small company. Just remember good ole Bill stole Steve's idea and created the PC. So if you think of that Apple was a huge part of MS future. Apple computers are still top with MS and Linux. I think Steve Jobs has the right idea just maybe not in the complete right way.

  Well, 1st off..

The kid works for himself, his news site is/was an apple fan site. Secondly, he does real journalistic work, pretty much every reporter has their own sources, and if I remember correctly, it's even protected under law. Finally, if apple has such a huge problem with it, they should go after the leak, not sue the guy for reporting on his 'scoop'.

As an aside, I wonder if the guy is still a fan of apple now...

  Customer Support

Apple is losing their core supporters. They are putting too many apples into the i-pod basket.

Who cares about a 500 dollar apple (without monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc...) that's just another unhappy customer with a broken apple that can't get fixed.

ask me about my logic-board problem.
