The US is expanding its tsunami warning system by incorporating it to the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Carribean. Currently, its warning system only monitors the Pacific Ocean. The new system will take 2 years and cost $37.5 million.
The White House reports that 32 new advanced technology deep ocean buoys will be deployed by 2007. This system is said to give the US the capability to respond to tsunamis in minutes. Other parts of the world will be incorporated as well.
Half of the world's oceans will be included in this system. The UN wants to install such a system for the Indian Ocean by 2006. By 2007, the UN hopes to cover the rest of Earth with warning systems.
