UK Man Decapitates Himself Out of Tsunami Grief

A 31 year old man felt so depressed and helpless because of the Asian tsunami disaster he tied one end of a rope around a tree, the other around his neck and then drove off at high-speed, decapitating himself in the process.

Daniel Watson, from New Addington, had recently completed a trip around the world with his fianceé which included a visit to Thailand. His family said that the TV footage of the tsunami destruction had upset him greatly.

His mother said "We all watched the coverage of the tsunami over Christmas and we just kept saying to Daniel 'Thank God you're here and you're safe' but he was very upset by it. He said 'I have to go back out there and help them'".

  What a waste
What a pointless waste of life. If he wanted to go and help he should have done so, not killed himself. What a tit!

  Also...
Also amazing is the fact they sent an air ambulence! What were they expecting to do, sew his head back on?

  @vgslag
As the source says: ""He said 'I have to go back out there and help them'. But he was tied to a contract at work and he couldn't go."

I can quite understand how he felt, particularly as he'd only recently been to the region and experienced the beauty and culture of one of the most facinating parts of the world. Its a shame that he couldn't have seen himself through the initial shock and grief, since I'm sure that, in time, he would have come to terms with it.

The only thing that can accomplish
is more grief on the part of his family and friends, not to mention that police and medical workers probably don't like to see decapitation. Good job "Daniel"

Yes, but with a little bit of thinking we can see that by killing himself he has broken his contract. I'd rather break it by going to help someone rather than removing my head.

  Don't lose your head
If you feel for the victims of this tsunami work an extra job and give the money to charity, or go out there yourself. I think this person had other issues. But I guess he's fixed that problem.

  <sigh> have some compassion
I mean the guy paid the ultimate price here to end his pain.. obviously that pain was great for him to have taken such action. I don't see how anyone can fault him for it.

of course you can fault him, moron.
Him killing himself isnt the end, he's left behind a grieving fianceé, mother, father, brothers, sisters etc who are no doubt distraught now that this moron killed himself.

And instead of helping them he killed himself? and im sorry the arguement of being tied to a contract doesnt wash, he felt ok to break the contract through death but not helping the still living victims?

imo, moron.

  What a moron
Hard to imagine what goes on in this guys mind as he accellerates away from the tree, knowing his head is about to pop off.

I mean this guy is not really stupid, he is mentally ill. "I can't go back and help them so I'm going to hurt my family as much as I possibly can" - uh. Yeah. Obviously.

  @LOL
 >Yes, but with a little bit of thinking we >can see that by killing himself he has >broken his contract. I'd rather break it >by going to help someone rather than >removing my head.

But he was already out of his head with grief, so it was only proper he crop it off proper.

What a moron.

  He's not a total moron.
The way he did it is pretty creative. I've never heard of someone attaching a rope to their head and a tree, then speeding off in order to commit suicide. It's sort of like a take off on the string, the loose tooth, and the slamming door trick. Maybe it wasn't the most original idea, but I give him points for creative variation. I wonder if he had to plan the length of the rope in order to have enough distance to reach the proper speed for decapitation. Anyone got an equation on that?

Well, he did do one good thing for humanity...
He killed himself before he had children, thus spreading his defective genes. Mother Nature can sure still weed them out....

  Lucky fianceé
This is probably the best thing that could have happened to his fianceé. If this moron was that disturbed I can’t help but wonder if in the near future we wouldn’t be reading about her and/or their children meeting their untimely demise in some mysterious accident. This guy was a walking time bomb with some serious mental issues. Their is now one less idiot on this earth. I do feel terrible for his family. Wonder if he even cared how this would affect them.

  Um, Anyone?
Ever hear of survivor's guilt? Maybe that is what drove him to do this.

  Mmmmm....
I must have that then. Although, clearly, in a much much smaller amount....

But, If I'm topping myself I'm taking others with me.... So nobody wind me up too much...or you'll read about it on SN.... Mmmmm, I'd better stop reading Anti's posts as well...

  what a load of crap!!!!
There are and have been so many disasters in the world, man made and natural. I'm not happy it happened but I would never stop my life for something like that.
This tsunami thing is way over the top. The people left will probably die of typhus and cholera anyway.
