A purported tomb of Columbus in the Dominican Republic is set to be opened. The research team of a Spanish forensic geneticist and two high school teachers from Seville hope to find DNA samples if the bones are in good enough condition.
While the Dominican Republic has approved the opening of the tomb, it would also have to approve DNA sampling. The researchers want to compare DNA samples with DNA taken from Columbus' relatives that are buried in Seville.
Where Columbus was buried has been a mystery for quite some time, and there is a tomb in Seville of a man who is also purported to be Christopher Columbus. It is known that Columbus' body was relocated several times after his death.
