Mentally ill people were considered sub-human by the Nazi regime, and historians have now concluded that Adolf Hitler's family had its share of mentally ill members. They go as far as to say that one of them was gassed to death.
Aged 49 when she died, Aloisia V was Hitler's second cousin, once removed, and had a history of schizophrenia, depression and delusions. She was killed on 6 December 1940, at a mental institution in Austria.
Historian Timothy Ryback and colleague Florian Beierl say they found several "cases of either physical or mental disabilities" in Hitler's family. A report by the Gestapo in 1944 called Aloisia's family line "idiotic progeny".
