Tsunami Warning System Operational by 2006

The UN has announced funding for a tsunami detection and warning system in the Indian Ocean. The plan involves a €23m network of deep-sea buoys in the Indian Ocean which aims to be operational by mid-2006.

The director of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction in a press statement said “By putting the network under the guidance of the UN, it ensures all countries participate on equal terms”.

He also pointed out that other major disasters weren’t getting media coverage because of the tsunami and reminded the press that 300 million children worldwide suffer from chronic hunger.

  Stupid
A tsuniami of this magnitude hits about once every onehundred years. If you look at the number of people saved per pound spent (23 mil i this case), you have to ask yourself if the money might not have been better spent fighting disease and doing aid work in the region. 250000 dead is a very large number, but the same number of people die every 10 weeks from diseases that are very easy to cure and protect against with the right medicine.

On the other hand, political reputations and tourist spending is at risk, so by all means let's build this thing. Who knows, in fifty to a hundred years someone may actually benefit from it.
