US Dispatching 18 Robo-Soldiers to Iraq

The US Army is preparing 18 Special Weapons Observation Reconnaissance Detection Systems (SWORDs) units to go to Iraq sometime in March and April. The units are robotic vehicles which act as sharpshooters. They are remotely controlled.

The vehicles come equipped with cameras which allow humans to select targets to fire upon. The vehicles will not fire until a human selects the target and presses a button. The robots are three feet high and carry standard issue M249 or M240 weapons.

So far Talon robots have been used by the US military to defuse roadside bombs. The company behind the project is converting Talons into SWORDs. They can run sometime between 1-4 hours on their lithium ion batteries.

  Sure.....

I immediately see two problems:

1. Jamming... Unless the controlling soldier is pretty conservative about firing this thing, it's going to get gunked up and jam pretty quickly. With no one to clear the jam, the weapon is useless.

2. This might work going down a road or something like that, but not in the middle of a city. Someone could just run out behind it, disable it, and get themselves a free SAW or 240G with a bunch of ammo.

I'm sure they've forseen these and found solutions already...

  Eh..

The robots are gonna act like sharpshooters, They arnt gonna be rollin down mainstreet. They'll probably be in some remote area where they can snipe from. Which also means they probably wont be poppin off hundreds of rounds and getting jammed.

And with the batterylife of only 1-4 hours. I dont see how they could even leave them unattended very long.

  This is cool

Oh man... in the end they'll decide the human pressing the button is too much effort and activate skynet to take care of it for us. ;)

The guns may be mounted on a slow moving platform but that is probably for stability and anyway who wants to rush into a bomb area. Some of these weapons platforms can shift. Watch some of the clips from the anti missile systems mounted on ships. They move pretty quick and are restricted areas on board as they start without any warnings.

  Guard Towers In Desert Area's

How about using these little beasties as mobile and stable guard tower units, able to not care about blistering wind or hot sharp sand; operated from within a nicely air conditioned bunker a mile away.

An idea.

  Phalanx CIWS

I think Bag was talking about the Phalanx. Those things are awesome. It's kinda fun to watch 'em track low-flying objects from the flight deck. The last ship I was on had like four of them.

Anyway, I think we should but a Phalanx on wheels and roll it out there. http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/

interesting, but it says they weigh so much, i doubt it would end up bieng cost effective. but what about that gun from the jackel, put a couple different turrets onto it, mount it on a set of its own wheels, now that would be killer :-)
