Passengers on the P&O charted cruise were supposed to visit 23 countries but instead ended up stranded for 12 days out in the sea near Southampton. To make up for this, the operators of the Aurora handed out free booze.
The 1,300 passengers aboard consumed 12,626 bottles of champagne and wine, 9,800 cocktails, 12,843 beers and 1,246 bottles of spirits. They will also get a full refund. People paid up to £42,000 for the attempted voyage.
Mary Baldwin, 67, remarked: “Lots of people had far too much to drink. It was terrible to see people having so much. It made you ashamed to be British."
