Criminal Investigation Into Missing Hard Drive

The University of N. Colorado reports it is missing a hard drive which could contain details regarding 30,000 people. Info on the drive includes names, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, birth dates and names of employee beneficiaries.

While the university does not know if the drive was stolen or if it is simply missing, campus police are investigating the matter. Information on 15,790 former and current employees was also stored on the drive.

The longer it stays missing, the more the University's President is fearing the drive it was stolen. UNC President Kay Norton says: “So we have to assume the worst."

  Missing?
If it's simply missing they should sue the stupid folks there. How can you misplace such an important piece of hardware. Should have been locked up in a volt or something.

The folks working there stole it, I bet.

  what'd they do...
Walk in to their office one morning and try to turn the computer on. When it wouldn't start they said "Hm, I guess we lost it somewhere. It couldn't be stolen!"

I dont know about anyone else but my hard drives dont have feet.

  Missing?
Let me guess… housekeeping came in to dust the computer and the hard drive accidentally fell out and was inadvertently sucked up in the vacuum. Please!

  Guys,
A lot of people have removeable caddies for HDAs with sensitive data on them. They get removed and stored as a matter of course. If this drive was not used too often it could easily get stolen or just misplaced.
