Google Launching Free Phone Service

Google is working on launching a free VOIP service for broadband internet users who just need a home computer and a headset to connect. Skype already offers this service, and it has seen 54 million downloads. Google has more name brand recognition.

The search engine and the phone could be linked. For example, people could phone businesses they find through the Google's search engine to ask about products. Half of all searches in the world are made through Google's search engine.

The company will have to invest in software and capacity so connections are more reliable and sound quality is not poor. Google could purchase some of the unused thousands of miles of fibre-optic cable that exist, and it has the cash to spend.

 the term 'Internet' will be replaced simply with 'Google.'

  You want to bet...
 on how long it remains "free?" Remember Microsoft Instant Voice Messaging? It was free for a little while.

  Google is not Microsoft
 I wouldn't put my hands on fire defending Google but they have shown a much much much better approach to the consumer that MS ever did.

In my opinion, the people from Google have understood that the business practices have changed and they have found ways to make billions without the simply overcharging users like MS does.

  Skype is good
 I have no problem with skype and i don't know why google bothers to compete in this.But does it mean call buisness over the VOIP or acctually call thier physical phone. It would be a bit a anoying to have a business constanty being called at 3am by some buy in mongolia asking about underpants drawers, or people just mindlessly calling for no reason.

  Google is better
 They've got the name and the money to really get this thing going. Skype is a good product, but how many people know about it compared to the hundreds of millions who have heard about Google.

  Skype would be big if Google started charging
 Instant messages of the future;
"Google said they will start charging some time next year" - user 1
"Go to skype.com, it is still free" - user 2

Then Skype puts a browser on its page. :)
