Mount Everest could be Shrinking

China fears that the worlds tallest mountain might be shrinking. A recent survey concluded that the peak had dropped 1.3 meters (4ft) due to global warming. The actual height has been a long controversy.

Mt. Everest was first measured in 1850s by China, however in the 1950s India recalculated with a more accurate result of 8,848m tall. U.S scientists used GPS technology to measure in 1999 adding 2 meters to the height.

But today the melting of glaciers on the mountain due to the global warming is believed to be causing the mountain to shrink. China will remeasure Mt. Everest in March.

it really could be shrinking.. as the third paragraph said, global warming is believed to be causing the glaciers to melt, thereby reducing it's height..

  shrinking?

Well, technically, the ice is melting, but the mountain's height remains the same. I mean if it snowed much more next year, could we consider Everest to be growing?

  Glaciers as "mountain?"

-- As part of the Earthen mountain itself, no. The only thing shrinking is the ice.

We call mountains of ice icebergs; this is no such thing.

It is a conventional mountain with an ice-cap.

Thus, the title is misleading.

"Mount Everest's height questioned" would be more appropriate.

Shrinking mountains are not discussed in the article. China's fears notwithstanding, of course.

The controversy is on the measured, cumulative (Earth and Ice) height.

As far as newsworthiness, this is up there with EU bureaucrats miscalculating the average penis length of Germans...

When it is 10 feet high I will attempt the climb

and hire a sherpa to carry me up in a rickshaw.

Because it was there, what kind of lame excuse it that to freeze toes off. I don't go jumping off bridges because they are there.
