Margaret Spellings, the new US Education Secretary, objected to a PBS cartoon because two lesbian couples were shown. "Many parents would not want their young children exposed to the lifestyles portrayed in the episode."
The cartoon, "Postcards from Buster" showed a rabbit visiting Vermont and 2 lesbian couples appeared. The focus of the cartoon was on maple sugaring and farm life, not Vermont's legalization of same-sex civil unions.
PBS says its decision to no longer send this episode to its 349 stations has nothing to do with Spellings' remarks. Boston public television station WGBH is going to air the episode March 23rd and make it available to other PBS stations that want it.
Am I the only one who sees something fatally wrong with PBS? Either they believe the public consists completely of idiots or they're being pressured by an unseen hand. Either way, PBS seems to be a shady organization.

This show is aimed at children. If you were to ask any child this show is made for what they thought about the two ladies, they would probably say they are friends, or sisters. This would be the same if you showed a man and a woman. This may be a shock to a lot of people, but children do NOT automatically assume that people who appear on television together are having sex together! If the show doesn't say these two women are lesbians, and if the obsessed-with-sex puritans don't tell their children they are lesbians, then it won't EVER occur to the children they are lesbians. By calling attention to the ladies, those objecting are making SURE that the concept of lesbianism is introduced to thier children. But then again, if you don't introduce the concept, you can't teach the hate. What would they do then?

I watched Seasame Street twice a day growing up. I understood that they lived with each other but so did the Odd Couple. At a young age you do see same sex couples having non-sexual plutonic relationships. Some times in television two men who are working and not well off share a room because of economics, not sexual relations. I think that to a child you do see gay couples, especially in cities. Perhaps labeling them lesbians was going to far, you never hear that Bert and Ernie were gay. That difines the the abmiguity of the relationship to a sexual relation ship. Otherwise they are just two women living together, still a couple which was how I used to see it. I remember things when I was very young, I am 25 yet I remember houses I lived in before I was 2.
Oh, and personaly I think most fundamentalists are most afraid of there kids choosing to be gay and shaming them infront of their fundamentalist peers.
What if there is no life after death, every religion says there is but prove it. Reincarnation, heaven, hell, limbo which is it? What if this life is all you have and will ever get and religion is there only so you don't keep thinking about your death. There are some people with abnormal genitalia. Hermaphrodites. Now, tell me if two hermaphrodites are gay. Some men have XYx genes and some women have XXy. Clearly there are some people born gay. Actually some people go past just preaching to people about the evils of homosexuality. I'm not saying everyone but you have to admit there are some extremists amongst religious people. Why not speak out against other things with such a passion? For instance drinking, smoking, gambling, everything on the 10 Commandments, etc. I think those things hurt more people than anything else yet they aren't as important to speak out against for some reason? To give you the short answer first, because it wasn't the topic of conversation at the time. And yes there are extremist, in every group. And I only spoke out against this passionately because I was fed up with ppl beating down on a group that is "easy" to pick on. Granted, there has been blood drawn on both sides, but in the end it all comes down to (at least IMO) where you stand when it comes down to morality. And unfortunately, that is not a topic most ppl are keen on because most ppl don't want any kind of accountability to someone other than themselves. "If it feels good, do it" seems to be the trend. (With the exception to those that don't have a choice ie: it being forced on them.) I never implied it was like that despite previous post.
As for your other question, i have to disagree. We aren't animals, we have intellect and souls, not cunning and instinct. As for the species remark, i would ask how does that square off with the question "How is 3-6% normal? Not my own figure, and not being crass, just asking a question. Peace.
True we have souls but that is the only thing that seperates us from the other animals. There are plenty of animals that are very intelligent (perhaps moreso than some humans ;). At the core we are still animals with animal urges and instincts. Examples of this: fight of flight defense, sexuality, rage, etc.
Where did your 3-6% figure come from? Also does it imply 3-6% of species or 3-6% of animals within a species?
I don't feel really strongly either way on this subject... however, I feel that people are entitled to do what they will in their own homes so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. Is the fact that a few people are attracted to the same sex ruining the lives of those who oppose it?

Frankly, people are people. I'm still confused over why it's necessary to go beyond that. After that everything seems to become so arbitrary.
