Pedophiles Said to Get Off on Blogs

Forensic psychologist Rachel O'Connell told the Scottish Parliament today that children who create weblogs are vulnerable to pedophiles who seek to groom them for sex. A law is being considered with 10 year jail sentences for this practice.

According to O'Connell: "This is just a paedophile's dream because you have children uploading pictures, giving out details of their everyday life because it's an online journal." She adds that mobile weblogs allow pedophiles access via phones.

She says RSS feeder programs can be used by pedophiles to track children who put pictures on weblogs. A group of pedophiles could also take information from the weblog to track children and abduct them. It is argued parents need more awareness.

The Internet are as dangerous as the Streets
Parents should always see the screen that the children are using the internet on. Its not hard.

www.realvnc.com
free program (open source) that allows you to see the screen of another computer. Also allows you to control the computer remotely or not depending on options. Two computers are needed ofcourse.

I am not associated with realvnc, only recommending them. Its free like linux versions are free, also has a linux version.

  Can be.. could be..
Is this woman describing her personal fears or a phenomenon that actually happens?

An RSS reader *could be* used. Yeah, I suppose so. Kids who blog *could* be kidnapped. I guess any kid could be kidnapped. Mobile weblogs *allow* access via phones. Yes I suppose it does.

It's just the article doesn't say a thing about if any of these actually happen, and why such a strict law is necessary.

good point, they *could* be squished by an asteoid. there is no real content.

Just passing the buck of responcibilities of parents to governments and law inforcement. Like they don't have enough to do. Almost all Blog programs have the responces open to the public so I think current legislation would cover that under corrupting a minor.
How about, instead of this law, and how much it would cost to inforce, it is used in education programs for parents. Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Parallel to ericcode and mberg's thinking..
How is a situation where a pedophile targets a kid through the internet worse then a pedophile who goes outside his house and targets a kid he sees there? This may sound pessimistic.. but if a pedophile is gonna participate in, umm, pedophilic activities, it's just gonna happen one way or another. We shouldn't be concerning ourselves with how he/she goes about it... but with the act itself.

 Very good points!

Blogs *could* lead to the destruction of society. Or not.

  It's TRUE!!
White mice cause cancer. I've seen it in labs. Every white mouse they try to give cancer gets cancer. It can't be coincidence can it? Alarmists kill me :(

  i could see this happening
all you basically need is the city they live in and a phone directory (online). whoever can't see this happening is either a blog owner or a pedophile. :\

  Back to the Parents
Ericcode's suggestion for a screen-monitoring program (what an awkward concept to write out in words) is a good one.

Parents need to be responsible for letting their kids loose on the internet. I kinda wonder what parents are think if they know their kids are putting up blogs and photos anyway.... and if they don't know then that's even worse!

I guess we can blame the internet for this! Hell, why don't we blame it for everything?
