Next generation MP3 Format Discussed

A conference held in Cannes, France is discussing how to promote a new MP3 format which uses multichannel audio similar to that found in cinemas. As reported on SN, German software designers have already designed this format.

Multiple speakers and 5.1-channel sound cards will be necessary for those who want to use this format on PCs. Surround-sound headphones necessary to hear the format will not hit the market for a while.

To hear the format, people can download the MP3 Surround Evaluation Software 1.0 from the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. The software plays files with the new format plus files without the format. Other technologies were also discussed - see link.

Ogg Vorbis and Surround sound headphones

The open source audio format as DivX is to DVD, .OGG files are to .MP3
Its like Linux to Windows. Its free to use. And has way better sound and the files are smaller. Winamp plays them.

Surround sound headphones are available where I live.

I want them, haven't tried them yet but aparently you hear people sneek uping on you in first person shooters.
Cause only the back speakers play the sound of his footsteps.

  What about AC3?

5.1 channel MP3s? Sounds like AC3 to me. As far as I remember, it's basically 6 channels of mp3 data multiplexed into one.

  Hmmm

From what I heard before the source is somewhat wrong. People with a normal speaker setup (2 or 2.1) can still listen to the mp3s but not in surround sound of course.

  Zalman

Heh, when I read this I was wondering if my zalmans would work with the format.

After all it said "Surround-sound headphones necessary to hear the format will not hit the market for a while."

They're amazing. It was alot easier to track people through walls with the headphones than my 4.1 speaker setup. The cord's too long though, I usually roll over it with my chair. I think that might be why the left speakers are getting weaker...

Pretty Sure it will work.
Its all in the Sound Card. Because the new format will conform to 5.1 the headphones will work but lose the CenterChannel which is just a combination of Left and Right Front anyway. 5.1 to 4.1 is no big loss.

As I understand it 5.1 works like this
1)Right Front
2)Left Front
3)Center Front
4)Right Rear
5)Left Rear
.1) Bass (Bass is nondirectional sound in that you feel it but can't really tell the direction)
And you in the middle gives you the sense of 3D sound.

8.1 is where I think it will end and I have seen it.
1)Right Front Floor
2)Left Front Floor
3)Right Front Ceiling
4)Left Front Ceiling
5)Right Rear Floor
6)Left Rear Floor
7)Right Rear Ceiling
8)Left Rear Ceiling
.1)Bass (same stuff for 4.1 to 8.1)

This will let you hear what something falling or blasting off will sound like direction wise as well as wizzing by you. Video Games and Movies are all I can see using this for a while. And 8.1 headphones are going to be Big Ass honken' phones. Those Zalmans look big already. Like putting your head in a wood vice.
