A conference held in Cannes, France is discussing how to promote a new MP3 format which uses multichannel audio similar to that found in cinemas. As reported on SN, German software designers have already designed this format.
Multiple speakers and 5.1-channel sound cards will be necessary for those who want to use this format on PCs. Surround-sound headphones necessary to hear the format will not hit the market for a while.
To hear the format, people can download the MP3 Surround Evaluation Software 1.0 from the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. The software plays files with the new format plus files without the format. Other technologies were also discussed - see link.
