A Norwegian teenager has been ordered by Norway's highest court to pay the music industry $15,900 because his Napster.no web site offered 170 free MP3 files between August and November 2001. This ruling upholds a lower court's ruling.
The student said he made the web site as part of a school project. It has no relation to the company Napster. Music industry groups are pleased about the ruling. His site provided links to MP3s that others posted online.
A lower court originally ruled that the student was not liable because he only provided links to material that others were pirating. The highest court determined that showing people where illegal music was is "abetting" illegal acts.
