Fire Risk Found in Ford 150 Pickups and SUVs

In a voluntary recall, Ford is recalling 792,000 Ford 150 Pickup trucks, 2000 Lincoln Navigators and Ford Expeditions because of faulty cruise control switches that could spark fires when the vehicles are parked.

63 alleged vehicle fires and one alleged injury have been reported. The problem with the switch is that when the engine is shut off, power is directed to the switch which overheats enough to spark a fire. Plastic components are near the switch.

Ford will officially announce the recall next month and dealers will deactivate the part without charge. The company has to get an ample enough supply of switches first before the parts can be replaced. Letters will then be sent out.

  This is scary..

I saw this on the news tonight. The switch is located on the front of the brakes' master cylinder. When the switch overheats, it sets the plastic switch and the plastic master cylinder fluid reservoir on fire.

  Voluntarily...

Ford is known for being the one car manufacturer who would rather tell everyone about a problem with their vehicles and then fix it, than to just hide the problem and hope nobody finds out, as most other companies do. I applaud Ford for taking action in making their vehicles even more safe than they already are.

  Ford...

seems to have had bad luck with fire. The 1958 Ford had an engine fire problem, then there was the Pinto, and the problem with Ford Ambulances catching on fire and now the truck.
