A friend of Brighton, UK resident Julian Brooker recently told an inquest that the man died because he was was imitating Gollum from Lord of the Rings. Brooker went to the London Road station at 4am on Oct. 23, 2004 to play "The Gollum Game."
Eva Natasha recalls, “He touched a rail and pretended to be electrocuted. I didn’t find it funny, but assumed he knew what he was doing. Then he touched the live rail once. He wouldn’t have touched it if he had known it was live.”
The rail that Brooker touched had 750 volts of electricity. His friends called 999 but he was already dead on the scene when help arrived. The coroner says Brooker was obsessed with the number 23 and drank on the 23rd of every month.
The part of LOTR where gollum touches an electric railway track, the article didn't explain why he did it very well.
koultunami, where do you get off on making fun of people dying? Do you know how many innocent men women and children die through electric shock? This man stupidly brought it on himself, yes, but a little something called respect, everyone makes mistakes, he just happened to make a really bad one. Are you so weak you can only attack the dead?
Yes I will mock the stupid for dying in stupid ways.
When i hear about morons killing themselves, i sneer at them, and revel in the fact there is more oxygen for the smarter humans, and will often try and recommended them for a Darwin award.
i.e. man jumps in great white shark tank to retrieve watch and gets eaten
i.e. man plays chicken with express train and loses
i.e. man blows his brains out playing Russian Roulette
Oh but don't worry, I mock the living stupid too, such as Police departments arresting small boys for drawing stick figures, or how about the courts spending over £15,000 trying to convict a women for eating an apple in her car?
Gollum = Lord of the Rings Golem = Harry Potter (and numerous other mythological stories) a golem is basically a magical construct, a Frankenstein's monster if you please... I've read LotR a whoooole lotta times, and I've never seen anything regarding trains or electricity... and I've read the HP books as well, and other then the train that takes them to school (steam train at that), I don't recall anything in there remotely close to this.. Darwinism at it's finest..
First of all, Golem is not a JKRowling thing, it's an old childrens' myth (origin in Czech republic, if I'm not mistaken).
Secondly, the guy was a Gollum fan. Apparently, if you read the article, the electrocution had nothing to do with LOTR. He was moving like Gollum, and kidding around with his friends, pretending to be electrocuted. And accidentally touched the rail. The train had nothing to do with LOTR.
Also, the guy and his friends were all drunk.
Finally, about the number, the guy was 23 yrs old, he died on the 23rd, always drank on the 23rd and was obsessed with the number... kinda reminds me of a good german movie I once saw, although I'm not sure the number was 23. (could have been 27). Anyway, it's got something to do with Illuminati and that sort of thing.
Anyway, if it wasn't for the Gollum thing and the 23 thing, this guy would have died because he was intoxicated and got electrocuted. Doesn't seem so weird anymore.
And that is a ridiculously misleading title. I thought maybe he fell to his death recreating the end scene or something good. If he were just walking out of the bathroom and then proceeded to electrocute himself would they say "Boring, uninteresting man dies after taking a crap" ? :)
actually, your title should be "Users Insult Stupid Dead Man" stupidity that results in one's own death should be lauded, he has made the gene pool deeper through his demise
