Third Columnist Named in Bush Propaganda Probe

Conservative columnist Mike McManus was paid $10,000 to promote marriage by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, making him the 3rd columnist paid by the Bush administration to promote administration policy.

The use of taxpayer money to fund propaganda breaks federal law.

McManus' disclosure comes on the heels of Armstrong Williams' payment to promote No Child Left Behind and rally black journalists, and Maggie Gallagher's payment to talk up marriage.

McManus' column appears in about 50 U.S. newspapers, and recent columns have touted HHS' marriage initiative. Bush has ordered his Cabinet secretaries not to secretly pay columnists to promote their goals. McManus declined to comment.

  OK
 I'll pay you $20 if you can restore democracy, free speech, tolerance to other religions/beliefs and equal rights for all. You have one week.

  Laws mean nothing to them
 "The use of taxpayer money to fund propaganda breaks federal law."
Add that to list of laws that president Bush and his people have broken. Don't foget to include international treaties (The Geneva Conventions for one.) How many federal/international laws DO you have to break to get impeached? Or do you just have to fool around with an intern. Ah! That's right. The puritans can't stand sex, but all the rest is forgiveable.

  i don't get it...
 WERE these columnists right-wing to start with? i can see bribing people who would normally oppose your opinions, because to have your opponents support you is a coup. but if they were already right-wing, does that mean that the bush administration can't even get support from their own supporters without bribes?

i hope so. that would be funny.

  what they are doing...
 The columnists are right wing to start with but they are paying them to promote bills they want passed in Congress. Its kind of like payola for writers.
 by: JFURY     01/30/2005 06:41 PM
  They are paying them with taxpayer money
 out of the public treasury for partisan political purposes.

It dosen't matter from whence they came somuchas that they are presently laden additional resources for their advocacy of what they advocate.

These monies came from the budgets for the the 'Health and Human Services,' 'Education,' etc, etc.

These are not campaign funds, and not political funds. These are functional, purposeful funds meant to be spent on staff and material resources "as-is."

Not to push some political agenda on the taxpayer's dime. Certainly, not like this. It has been done, but Bush is the most unsubtle sort of scoundrel that has creepthed his way into the Oval Office.

They've only so far found the Third Columnist.

The Fifth Columnist is the President himself as are his neoconservative staff.

  Well said...
 ...but the country will excuse them for that crap... and oust a past president for having an affair. Don't you love the way the US works?

  @all
 I think paying conservative columnists to promote your agenda has to be the dumbest thing ever. That being said, I would like to point out that Clinton was not impeached because he had an affair. He was impeached because he lied about it under oath to the Congress. Bush hasn't lied under oath. If you remember correctly, he fought being under oath during the 9-11 Commission. Hmmmmmmm. Regardless of who lied when, paying conservative commentators to do live ads for your agenda is not the smartest plan. These people were probably going to talk about it anyway. They just weren't talking about it enough to please Georgie. This hurts all columnists not just conservative columnists.

  @tomblik
 Yep Bush didn't want to purge himself.

Though your statements about Clinton are true ultimately it comes down to the same thing that he was impeached because of his personal life. It should have never been the target of an inquiry. I'm sure that the majority of presidents have done some less-than-honorable things while in office without it being brought to the public eye. It was just that Republicans wanted to tarnish his standing with the American people since he was sitting well with a lot of the people.
