At Least 44 Dead in Iraq Election; Turnout is High

Iraqi voters defied threats of violence and calls to boycott the election to cast a ballot in the nation's first free vote in 50 years. Insurgents killed themselves and at least 35 others in suicide bombings and mortar attacks.

Though women wearing black abayas prayed silently while waiting to vote as the sound of an explosion was heard nearby, for many Iraqis it was an upbeat occasion, with citizens and police dancing with joy for photographers.

Holding up her thumb stained with purple ink from voting, Karfia Abbasi said, "This is democracy."

Though it will be a while until official numbers are tallied, officials believe more than 7 million Iraqis voted.

  wow....

this might be the first positive thing I've heard come out of the whole Iraq situation.

It doesn't suprise me that nobody on Shortnews has anything to say about it though....

I don't think there has been anything official yet. It is really probably too soon to tell anyway. According to http://elections.gmu.edu/ voter turnout for the 2004 US Presidential election among eligible voters was 60%. I believe that is the highest voter turnout in the US since 1968. Wouldn't it be awesome if the Iraqi eligible voter turnout is higher than the US? It would certainly dampen claims that the election was illegitimate.

Perhaps as many as 14 million voted, from what I heard most recently. And there were apparently about a dozen candidates on the ballot, which would seem to discourage any notion that there was little choice in the election.

Congrats, George W. The war has just been upgraded from "unmitigated failure" to "mitigated failure." Many military officials believed we could have had this WITHOUT bloodshed.

"Many military officials believed we could have had this WITHOUT bloodshed."

This, my friend, has already been proven to be a foolishly assumed notion, mainly adopted by liberal democrats who opposed the war.

The third to last election in Iraq had 90% of Iraq voting for Saddam, with another 10% voting against him. The 10%, for the most part, are no longer alive to tell their story. The following election had Saddam winning 100% of the vote. Only after blood was already shed was there no blood shed at the next election.

The voter turnout in Iraq puts the US voting turn out to shame. I heard most reports saying 72%, while one person told me he heard somewhere that it was 96%. I'm quite skeptical of the 96%, but, I do believe the percentage was greater than the 2004 US election.

U are aware that the US blocked an Anti-Saddam uprising before the war (which looked as if it could have worked) ...no ??? Problem being that if the Iraqi people had of ousted him themselves the US wouldn't get it's military base in the area .... so yeah it had to be war

I would laugh me head off if the Iraquis voted for a secular government like Iran.
Of cource, the US would never allow that to happen.
