SBC Acquiring AT&T In 16 Billion Dollar Deal

NEW YORK - SBC is acquiring AT&T in a deal that will create the largest telecommunications company in the world. The plan was announced following a meeting between SBC and AT&T officials.

SBC spokesman Larry Solomon was quoted as saying, "It's a done deal. We just agreed to acquire AT&T." The deal is expected to close by the first half of 2006. SBC has about 50 million local telephone customers.

AT&T's roots stretch back to 1875 when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. AT&T handled most of the telephone business up until 1984 when it was broken apart.

  They should drop...
the name AT&T completely. It used to stand for the best phone system in the world, now it stands for crap. I worked for this company and it's spin-off for 32 years. It has no resemblance to anything it used to stand for. The breakup of AT&T was our government's worst hour. IMHO.

How is that having one phone company for long distance and the same one for local good? My father and I had to go to the city and pick up our phones, we where forced to RENT them by AT&T, this was back in 1977. I remember that you where not allowed to do any home wiring or BIG AT&T will get your ass. I was just a kid back then, when I was not suffering from ADD, I was watching the news, and I remember hearing the pros and cons of AT&T. My father and I had to make the trip back a few years later to RETURN OUR RENTED PHONES when he got orders to for Panama and I was there watching the news that AT&T was broken up, some friends where there for dinner and I remember my father and them say,,, IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!! I only pay 40 bucks for local and long distance,, I have all the bells and whistles that go with the local service ,,caller id, call forwarding,,,ect,,, and I have unlimited long distance to all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.. 40 bucks that’s it. There maybe cheaper than that around the states. Canada has monopoly on Local and Long distance. When I tell my friends what I pay for, they are in shock! Same with my Mobile Phone, I pay less then their home phone for it. What do other pay for in other countries??? Please let us know!!!

  It was a better time...
because we didn't know any better. It was much better for the employees of AT&T. Corporate socialism is a good thing. We had a job for life. We had excellent benefits and retirement. It was slower paced than today. I'll always like those days better, but they are gone forever and soon no one will know any better. It is a shame.
