Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith, who died from enemy gunfire while defending his fellow soldiers in Iraq will receive the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously.
President Bush will present the award to Sgt. Smith's widow, Birgit, children Jessica, 18, and David, 10 during a ceremony at the White House. The exact date is unknown but will probably be in March.
Only 3,439 men and one woman have received the CMH since the Civil War. The award is given for the most extreme examples of bravery "above and beyond the call of duty".
