Mayor Florencio Valverde, the mayor of the Choras village in the Andean, which is just 155 miles from Lima in Peru, attempted to commit suicide in court on Tuesday.
After supposedly proclaiming that he could not get justice in his case, Valverde swallowed a flask of poison before he could be stopped. He was taken to a jail hospital and they pumped his stomach.
Florencio Valverde was sentenced to 20 years in prison for supposedly masterminding the murder of 2 people in Choras, where he was elected in 2002 to the position of mayor. Valverde accused the judges of finding him guilty for refusing to pay a bribe.
