Schiavo: Bush Flip-Flopped on Feeding Tube

As Governor of Texas, George W. Bush signed a law that would allow the removal of Schiavo's feeding tube. Based on this law a feeding tube was removed from a six-month old last Tuesday after a court hearing. The baby died almost immediately.

The law allowed the ending of life over parents objection, the opposite position Bush is taking now. He is now "saying 'The parents are protesting. You shouldn't stop,'" said John Paris, a Boston College medical ethicist.

The White House claims the positions are consistent with families right to prevent hospitals and doctors from ending life. Bush's spokesman however acknowledged that if the court action failed "The hospital still could authorize the end of life."

was pretty brilliant... Doesn't this bill conflict with Republican core beliefs for state rights? - "Yeah Republicans arugued for state's rights, but that was when they didn't control federal government. now they do, so theres that."

  the cost of medical care

Bush didn't want the health care companies in Texas to have to pay for these folks hooked to devices and now he doesn't care in the Schiavo case as her folks can pay the bills.

  NO equivalence or comparison

The infant in Texas was on a respirator - in other words - on life support. Terri Schiavo isn't on life support; now she's on death support. She was only fed and watered because she couldn't swallow. There is no Bush flip-flop because the applied principle is consistent with each unique case.

Some of these judges are simply assassins acting outside the bounds of their jurisdiction.

There is no living will to cover Terri, only the doubtful word of one person. The age old principle is:
"By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established."

  @Luhker

Two or three witnesses? A cute phrase, but not the way our legal system works. The judges in this case have done nothing out of the ordinary, period. Now, the Bushes and Congress, that's another matter, and for that it's ironic that you should accuse the COURTS of acting out of their jurisdiction. Are you so blind?

  by: momentofclarity     03/23/2005 10:10 AM
  Oh, and...

The irony is that Bush's law set a precedent for people being able to be taken off life support much, much earlier. So much for preserving life, and there's the contradiction. For what it's worth, an old guy called a radio station pointing this out today...using the example of his wife, whose plug they'd pulled before he was ready based on this law.

Bush does what he does based on who will approve of it. His professed values are as phony as everything else in Washington.

  Need correction

DUbbya had nothign to do with Shiavo, or however you spell it. While the case is similar in a law he signed as governor of Texas, the Schiavo case is in Florida. Please correct this.

  by: magnus   03/23/2005 09:46 PM
  @Magnus

Why is a correction needed? This story only points out hypocrisy between a law Bush signed and supported then compared to a position he has openly taken now (not an executive action he's taken now).

Bush cut his trip short and returned to Washington to sign the Shiavo law that Congress hurried through. Why would you say he had nothing to do with it when he had to sign it?

  by: lurker     03/23/2005 10:43 PM
  Didn’t Bush take a vacation in the summer of 2001?

Nothing happened important that year anyway… or at least nothing that required ANY special attention from congress or the president.

  by: Emp3r0r     03/23/2005 10:58 PM
  This is why I think we need a correction

"As Governor of Texas, George W. Bush signed a law that would allow the removal of Schiavo's feeding tube"

Ok, no Texas Law will supercede Florida Law. This says "As Governor of Texas, Bush singeed a law that would allow the removal...." Someone please tell me what the governor of texas has to do with florida, besides having a brother in that state. If it said "President Bush recently signed a law" or even " Governor Bush of FL". but as it reads, the govenor of texas made a law that reflects on a case on florida. Or maybe I'm just crazy....

  by: magnus   03/23/2005 11:59 PM
  Your crazy!

All they are pointing out is that as a governor GW Bush signed a law that said it was ok to pull the plug…
Now he is president and for what ever reason he has a different position on pulling the plug because he signed a bill that asks for a federal review of the case in hopes of an out come that keeps the woman alive.

I say it again they are just pointing out GW Bush has signed 2 bills that in essence contradict each other.

  by: Emp3r0r     03/24/2005 12:11 AM
  @magnus... this is why you're crazy

While governor Bush signed a law that would allow early termination of life support, including feeding tubes, depending if the patient could not pay for it and it bacame a burden on health care. Now as president, he has signed a *new* one time use only bill that orders the feeding tube of Schiavo to be replaced (this was big news, guess you missed it).... the feeding tube was not replaced btw, appeals court ruled against it today.
