Bangladeshi Customs Officials Fight Fraud: Turn Cars Into Scrap

 

Bangladeshi customs officials, spurred on by the countries struggle to increase domestic revenue, have begun to deal with tax evasion in an unorthodox fashion.

When it was discovered that a large cargo container was reported as containing "iron scrap" but actually contained luxury cars, televisions and appliances, they decided the trading firm responsible would get exactly what they declared: scrap metal.

In a public ceremony, hundreds looked on as officials from the National Board of Revenue used bulldozers to destroy the cars and goods, including a Mercedes Benz. NBR chairman K. Chowdhury says "they, or anyone like them, will not forget this"
