People Witness Rape in Public

North China- A 32-year-old trash collector followed a 19-year-old female into the public restroom and proceeded to rape her while a crowd of 40 people watched and did absolutely nothing.

Two police officers arrived at the scene while the rape was in progress and noticed a large crowd standing by the toilet. One of the officers questioned a bystander and was told that a woman was being raped inside the bathroom.

No help was offered to the woman as 20 minutes went by. The man was arrested as the crime was in progress.

  They are all guilty
They should all be arrested for aiding the crime. People are pathetic, thankfully china executes people.
Its just a pity all these people wernt, i know i am going to get flamed but this stuff pisses me off, any person who stands by and lets a person be raped doesnt deserve to be living.

  i agree
What were they thinking? Have they watched so much anima that they a numb to real life violence? I think the whole crowd should be prosecuted.

I don't care if i saw my two-timing ex girlfriend being raped i'd launch myself in there and incapacitate the rapist (i.e. a kick to the temple or brick) call police and ambulance.

I don't care if it was 5 guys raping a girl i'd still do something, even if it meant i took two of them out and they then kicked the shit out of me i'd still try to do my best.

  Nothing new
We have a term for this very social phenomenon - "diffusion of responsiblity." Google "Kitty Genovese" to find read about how that woman was stabbed to death, screaming all the while, in front of her apartment building and a similar number of onlookers 40 years ago. Not only that, but the killer left for 15 or 30 minutes before returning to finish her off. Too much anime? Kitty was murdered in the good ol' US of A. We find in social psychology that a person will help, but people will do nothing, assuming it's the place of someone else in the crowd to react.

  Group moronic mentality
I was on a bus once and an old guy fell at the bus stop, the bus driver just sat there with the doors open, the people on the bus just sat there watching. I had to walk from the end of the bus to help him up and into the bus.

I was driving in egypt on a business trip and I saw 3 guys beating the crap out of this girl with a group of 20 people watching. I stopped, picked her up and dropped her in a hospital at a considerable risk to my well being. The guys who turned out to be her brother and cousins might have attacked me but luckily they were cowards, her blood which stained the car could have been infectious, etc..

I think I am different from the norm, that's why i look for news on this site instead of eating what the teevee tries to feeds me. I think most of you are the same and for that you have my respect specially the ones i disagree with most.

And @ Newsflash
Yep, if it was Boolie I'd help, not to sure who the other person is, but it shouldn't matter who it is, help em out. Ya know what? Don't give the guy the death penalty. Cut him off from any future crimes. Literally. Then stick him in a jail cell with the largest guy in jail. Have him go through the same thing a million times. Teach people not to do this.

  Disaster pornography
is the result of this, we are exposed tp these thigns every day, all this violence, and it doesnt effect us. so we get the idea that when it actually happens to someone around us, we dont really care. cuz we are soooo de-sensitized to the effects theses thigs have

Seeing headlines like "woman raped" "person killed" ect. ect. over and over we just think of it as an everyday thing. The only reason its an everyday thing is because of people like this, that do nothing.

its sort of a vicious cycle, people see this everyday, dont care dont do anything, it happens, they dont do anything, then so on and so forth, the problem never gets solved.

what we have to do is step out of the norm, like someone earlier said, we need to take steps to understand the effects of these incidents, not just have the dditutde that says "oh well, poor person"

im sure the very first rape in public, the guy had his balls cut off, but now, no one even realises that is really that bad, and no one knows they need to help this person.

we are becoming addicted to violence, trying the feed our thirst, we stand by and watch.

 by: M.I.A.Elite     04/27/2005 05:32 PM
I don't think it is the violence and porn...
that causes the behavior to just stand by and do nothing.

Personally, I love watching violence, anime, porn, etc. But in a situation like this, even with all the desensitizing to violence that I have, I would hope that I would help.

I say hope because you can never be 100% sure what you would do until you are in that situation.

A few years back (about 9 years ago), I was leaving school, I was roller blading home, and I saw 3 guys I knew from school who fit the bully persona very well. So there is another guy I go to school with riding this cheap 8 dollar flea market bike along, and those 3 guys call him over. So when he gets over to them, one of them pushes him off his bike and takes it while the other 2 wail on this guy.

So even with my desensitization to violence, I still went over to the guy who took the bike, to try knock him over, try to stop him and help the guy getting wailed on. Now of course, wearing rollerblades and fighting don't mix, so I didn't really succeed, instead I pretty much ended up getting wailed on by all 3 guys until they left, but yeah, I tried.

I don't think MIA Elite meant disaster and porn, seems she meant disasterPorn as in too many disasters to watch. Just like the term carPorn is reserved for those stoopid racing movies that make you want to go race and jack cars.

right MIA?

  Thats insane...
Im shocked that no one did anything...thats just crazy. There must be more behind this story than people think.

I dont believe 40 people would stand back and let this happen.

 by: Vistrix   04/28/2005 11:35 AM
  exactly, not "porn" but disaster-porn
i used the term porn, to show its degenerative, addictive style.

and i do think desensitizing is a key role in this, people dont do anything because the dont understand the true violence it has.

not b/c they are scared, or ave cold feet, its b/c they are just ignorant now.

media, news, radio, t.v., all of these over-expose us to violence. and we find ourselves turning on the 9 o'clock news to find out who died today.

its wrong, we need to stop it, and no, im not talking about sexual porn.

 by: M.I.A.Elite     04/28/2005 03:49 PM
  @Vistrix
As I said before, we documented this in social psychology decades ago, and the poster child for it was a woman who wasn't just raped in public, she was stabbed to death. There needn't be more to the story - people behave differently in large groups.
 by: MomentOfClarity     04/28/2005 06:12 PM
  I DON'T KNOW...
I personally would really hope that I'd f****ing walk in there and kill the bas****. I think he deserves to die.

But in reality when this thing happens it is so shocking you dont know what you'll do.

The other day I was walking home down this alley and these three guys (chavs) with hoods and caps grabbed this guy threw him against a wall and stuck a knife in his face (not stabbing him but threatening to) and mugged him. There were quite a few people standing around and it was broad daylight and noone did a thing.

I really wanted to step in and help the guy who was quite understandably scared out of his mind. But I too was scared that if I intervened I'd be knifed and alll three of them would beat the sh** out of me - I've seen it happen.

So basically everyone felt paralyzed to do anything and the poor guy got mugged and they just pretty much walked off shouting what the f*** are you looking at at the bystanders.

Anyway I really hope in that situation though when there is only one attacker, there is no weapon and the victim is so vunerable and the crime is so serious I would interven and I'm sure I would.

  Messed up
That is seriously messed up, i fine this story hard to believe. 40 people standing around a restroom? i think those numbers are exaggerated. 40 people and not even 2 guys brave enough to go in and thump a weak pathetic loser who cant get a date? whats the world comming too these days everyone thinks about themselves and not others, these people should be imprisoned for not acting.

Yes this news was very sad and i did some research and went to some news sites in Northern China and ended up finding that same story in other news sites right in China
The Challenge was configuring my web browser to read differant languages
That took me awhile to figure out
Some internet sites your able to and other's might be in anther language which is hard to figure out
News in other countries is pretty neat
But its also a real big pain
I have a useful program which translates
every language out there to english so RedWarf thanks for the comment :)

why should any of the people helped. this is why we have law enforcement and security. and whos to say some of this "40" people werent his buds holding people back.
by: Mentally ill   04/30/2005 06:35 AM
  Not surprising
This really doesnt surprise me, the media objectifies women to the point it is implied that forced sex may not be a morally wrong act.

I get the feeling the "40" men who stood by and watched did so because it was just like watching an extreme porn video, it gave them a kick and they could quite possibly imagine themselves being the rapist. Although this is purely speculative.

As for the "chavs" that someone mentioned: A friend witnessed about 3 or 4 of these scum lining up 2 or 3 people against a wall, about 3 times someone came up to try and stop them. However they just got put at the end of the "queue" with the rest of the victims.

Finally when i think about it, there are rape porn sites where rape scenes are simulated which indicates that there must be AT LEAST a small market for this sort of thing and sites like ogrish that display mutilated bodies and the like as a supposed form of entertainment.

  There was a study...
The same thing happened long ago, where bystanders did nothing witnessing the same crim in progress. According to a study (which was made after the event happened), a bunch of people witnessing such crime in progress are more likely not to do anything at all. I forgot what this was called, some sort of shared psychological stuff.
 by: Fralebots   04/30/2005 03:18 PM
  @mentally_ill
Judging from your comments, your alias certainly fits. By not doing anything those 40 people were giving their tacit approval to the rapist, which in my opinion makes them just as guilty as he was. The whole 'not my problem' thing is quite common now, unfortunately. Pretty hypocritical too, seeing as how (most) people would hope that someone would come to their aid if they needed help. That attitude reminds me of an old saying:

First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.

  hmm
i do agree that it was wrong that 40 people watched, listened and did nothing but in China, what are the laws about taking the law into your own hands? not siding with the 40 people becasue i don't know china law but maybe they woudl have been arrested if they have helped?

A Phil Ochs song about the woman being stabbed...
"Outside of a Small Circle of Friends" is what the song is called. It mentions the woman being stabbed. It's a pretty good song, and brings up some very interesting points about society. You should all check it out.

  @Mentally ill
So you mean to tell me if you standing there you would have waited till the police came and just sat there and did nothing
I think Mentally Ill is just trying to get everyone mad
He would have helped and been on HeadLine news for doing so huh????

  Textbook Case of Bystander Effect
In the event of an emergency, if a large number of bystanders are present, it is very unlikely that anyone will help – this is known as the bystander effect. Because no one else in the group attempts to help, each individual feels less responsible and writes the situation off as a non-emergency. Bystanders go through a process in evaluating an emergency situation. They:
• Notice the event (or in a hurry and not notice).
• Realize the emergency (or assume that as others are not acting, it is not an emergency).
• Assume responsibility (or assume that others will do this).
• Know what to do (or not)
• Act (or worry about danger, legislation, embarrassment, etc.)
As mention in a previous response, this type of phenomena can be seen in the Kitty Genovese case. She was stabbed to death over a 45 minute period in 1960 while 38 people watched.

Are you thinking maybe this is just two coincidences? Well, they are not...Google ‘Bystander Effect’ and read up on the tons of studies conducted.

  Or
Lets gather United Nations Security Council, come to an agreement to go bomb another country. It is not because one country namely USA; cant do it, but more allegiance, means, justifies the beating. We are all like that one way or another, different causes, makes us take different sides. In the case of raping a woman and 40 man watching, is just another classical example of man. Man unfortunately are driven harder with sexual aberration, because of their hormone. The real culprit is Testosterone. Women on the otherhand will not succumb to such demented behaviour due to the lack of the same. There is something I had participitated in, a while back and today I am ashamed of it and I wish I wouldnt have been there to witness it. Where I was born, mob justice was the way to go. If a robber or a thief was caught, we would escort him to the nearest police station. In the meantime however; we would rain on him like flies on a carcass. while he is running towards the police station, this would be his last chance, whether to get there alive or perhaps die on the way to station. People would use anything on him, from knives to hooks, whips, chains, stones, bricks etc etc. If he gets to the cops station alive, first place to be sent would be the hospital. Now many times what I noticed was once they get to the station no one was claiming to be the victim of robbery! hence, the would be thief would go to the hospital if alive, and sent home, due to; no one coming forth to press charges. Reason # 1, to mob justice, was, even if you catch the real thief and call the cops. The Police was sooo corrupted, the very next day, you will come face to face with the person whom you sent to jail yesterday. Now imagine the fear in your eyes. Anywho to make this short. Oneday, a woman was chased from a shop. She took some under garments and didnt pay for them, as she walked out, the owner yelled at her to bring back the garments and she unfortunately took off. All he had to do outside his shop, was yell "Help Thieeef" as I had mentioned flies on carcass. People, without asking or wanting to, started chassing and when they caught her. MAN started punishing her. Except that since she was a woman, the only punishment in the eye of these men was to sexually molest her, while escorting her to the station. There are those who slapped her, some pinched her breasts, some inserted things in her from rear, some literraly plasted themselves against her, with their zipper down, some spat on her and attrocities continued on, until we arrived at the sttaion. I was about 9-10 years old and was looking at a naked woman on the street, that was my fascination. But if I am writting about it today, it is because I know how it has affected me. By the time we arrived at the cop station, this poor woman was drenched in blood, which some of it was coming from her privates. I wish I could go back in time, this time with an UZI, or M16A1 rifle and shoot the bastards, who mutilated this woman. I wish I can say sorry to her for being a witness who unfortunately jeered and added fuel to mob frenzy. I AM SORRY. But I know what men are capable of when it comes to opposite sex.

Why does this story have so many hits?
Over 6,000 people have read this--? Why the morbid interest?

Is it the mixture of sex and violence that lures people in?

  help
if you wanna help, by all means help. but what im saying is that if 40 people dont wanna help, then i guess your SOL. And 20 minutes for authorities to arrive is ridiculous, as a bystander, i would assume security would break this up in a minute, before anything was to happen. the security is at fault here.
