Al Qaeda Leader al-Zarqawi Evades Capture by US Forces

Most wanted Iraqi terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was within minutes of capture by US forces on 20th February but managed to escape, leaving behind two associates, his laptop computer and approximately $104,000 in cash.

Intelligence had reported that al-Zarqawi was on the move and traveling towards the town of Ramadi. A checkpoint was set up and as a car was pulled over by troops operating with a covert military unit a pickup truck behind turned around and sped off.

By the time the pickup had been relocated and stopped, al-Zarqawi was gone, probably after jumping out as the truck went under an overpass. The U.S. military at least has recent pictures of the militant leader, recovered from his My Pictures folder.

  Sounds familier somehow

This has got to be (at least) the 3rd time they've been within minutes of capturing a major terrorist leader. On a different (slightly) note...I always thought bin Laden was the leader of Al-Qaeda

OBL is the leader of Al Qaeda globally, but regionally al-Zarqawi is the daddy. The US said that they had killed this guy in an airstrike near the border with Syria a few years ago. The guy lost a leg and a few other bits but otherwise survived. In fact, he's doing very well for a one-legged Jordanian madman.

The word on da street is

that OBL wants al-Zarqawi ('Stumps' to his mates) to be the main man for future US mainland operations, so maybe he'll evaporate and reappear in some sweaty pole-dancer club in Texas or something.
