Ad Campaign Dismisses “Hype” of Obesity Epidemic

A new ad campaign has been launched in the United States, aimed at showing concerns over the number of obese Americans as “hype.” The organisation behind the campaign is being funded by casual-dining restaurant chains.

The campaign is being run by the Center of Consumer Freedom and follows a government report earlier this week that questioned government figures showing obesity causes nearly as many deaths as cigarette smoking.

The ads appeared in various newspapers around the US this week, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, as well as in billboard form in Washington.

The Center of Consumer Freedom is an organisation formed by restaurants and food companies. They are taking advantage of the fact that Western populations have finally become saturated with information about nutrition and diets. The public are pissed off with not knowing which 'experts' are right when it comes to what should or should not be consumed. They still want to eat healthily but want to be informed before making the right/wrong decision.

All this is big business clawing back what it has lost over the last few years. You wait - MacDonalds will become fashionable again, you'll see.

A bit more on the CCF

from prwatch.com:

The Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) (formerly called the "Guest Choice Network") is a front group for the restaurant, alcohol and tobacco industries. It runs media campaigns which oppose the efforts of scientists, doctors, health advocates, environmentalists and groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, calling them "the Nanny Culture -- the growing fraternity of food cops, health care enforcers, anti-meat activists, and meddling bureaucrats who 'know what's best for you.' "

And the US public is about to get suckered by them. These right-wing extremists get everywhere.

"And now, have some complimentary tripe!"

I love when these groups, concerned about "public choice" and the like, pop up. Always eager to make headlines, they always balk when someone asks who funds them. Thanks for the background, Flashby, though it really just confirms what most people ought to figure out for themselves - that it's big business trying to recoup profits at the expense of their customers. We all know what causes heart disease and diabetes, but these slimes will exploit any uncertainty to their own benefit. That the tobacco industry is in league here too is no surprise. "Casual dining" is the new tobacco, and it seems they're taking lessons. "See, the researchers are uncertain - so go on, it's okay to have a choice (to indulge in a life-shortening behavior)!"
