Chef Saved by Mobile Phone After Attack by Killer Spider

A chef who had been bitten twice by a spider hiding in a crate of bananas took a photo of it, believing it to be harmless, using his mobile phone. Little did he know that the arachnid was in fact a highly venomous Brazilian Wandering Spider.

Soon his hand began to swell up and he experienced dizziness so he made his way to hospital. He was sent home again but collapsed and was quickly readmitted. Medical staff had no idea what they were dealing with until the chef mentioned the photo.

After consulting nearby Bristol Zoo, doctors flushed out the spiders toxins with a saline solution and the victim was discharged. The spider was later found where it had landed after biting its victim - in "suspended animation" in his freezer.

  Day-Oh!

Come Mr. Tallyman tally me bannana.

What a lucky guy-- kept his head and saved his own life. But I am so suprised the cure was so simple. A bottle of Visine should come with every crate o' bannanas.

  Stupid hospital

Let's look at the details...man with huge swollen hand and dizziness claims a bite by a spider the size of his palm in a box of imported fruit. It really doesn't take a genius to figure that, since there are a lot of very deadly insects in the tropics, they probably should at least keep the guy under observation.

  wtf!!

the spider in question is all the way at the bottom right. He got bit by one of those and assumed it wasnt poisonous?

I hate spiders, if something like that bit me I would be crying like a school girl with skinned knees.

A few years back there was a scare locally here about bannanas and grapes where people where getting bitten. I hate spiders in the worse way almost as much as I hate ticks

  that spider

just looks like an english garden spider in that picture, but the symptoms arent garden spider related.

  I nearly fainted.

Just looking at the picture made me jump back and poke around my incredibly messy desk with a stick. After carefully checking the stick for any creepy looking spiders, of course.

*shudder*

I'm with RobBob on this one. I'd cry if that thing bit me, too. But I'm a girl and a girlie one at that, so I'd have a very good excuse. ;)

  Don't Kill No More Spiders!

My brother-in-law is a real arachniphobe. If he sees even a smallish spider he goes rigid and stops breathing. Its freaky to be ther when he goes off on one because a spiders parachuted down onto his head from the ceiling. And yet, he now lives in Cambodia which no doubt nhas spiders the size of monster trucks. I'd imagine he spends much of his time on a life support machine, but he's been there for a few years now and has no plans on comming back.

I don't understand this whole poo-your-pants thing with spiders. The bigger ones give me the shivers a bit sometimes but I'll still pick them up and carefully put them outside. Making an instant pizza out of them is not an option and the buddhist in me makes me want to be cool with them. Ticks, flies and mosquitoes can all burn in hell, though, for some reason...... :)

  nasty looking

The legs alone look agressive. But if the guy was in Australia it would have been viewed differently by the hospital, who would have immedietly administered a wide ranging anti-venom, we have more deadly insects and snakes than the rest of the world combined lol. Its kinda normal to get bitten here, at least by something lol.

When I worked for Marks and Spencers

This lady piced up a bunch of bananas and this black spider climbed on her hand at which point she screamed, the customers screamed, everyone screamed, she knocked it to the floor and put a plastic cup over it, they had to call some bio hazard pestcontrol team.

And they simply squished it with one of the dudes boots? hello!? i could have done that
