DNA evidence left on a victim’s underwear in 1973 has linked Clarence Williams, 58, to the rape. He is also suspected of raping at least 25 women in three states.
“This case shows the importance of the federal database. It will send a chill through defendants to know that you can still test for DNA after 32 years,” said District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
Williams was arrested and tried for rapes in the 70's, but one trial resulted in a hung jury and another was overturned. He was released on bail pending retrial on the two cases, but jumped bail in 1978 and was caught last year in Georgia.
