Battery Charges Dropped Against 7 Year Old Boy

Johnny Lee Morris was arrested in September for felony assault on an officer, another felony assault and a misdemeanor assault charge after punching, kicking and scratching a classmate and four adults at school, including a School Resource Officer.

Circuit Judge L. Ralph Smith threw out the charges after a psychologist testified Johnnie, now 8, would not be competent to understand the charges for several years due to his age and immaturity.

The boy's family has publicly complained the police mishandled the situation and should not have arrested Johnnie and had him placed in juvenile detention, claiming he has ADD. His family has not decided if he will return to his original school.

  Where were the parnets?
All good saying you shouldn't arrest an 6-8year olds, but don't you think the parents should be teaching children right from wrong? When i was 8 i understood my actions. I knew that if I punched someone, they were either going to punch me back or i would get in trouble.. quite simple

  ADD
is a bullshit catchall that's being overused to describe any child whose parents don't do their job in raising them...

  school
i went to the last school in the state (nsw, australia) that had corporal punishment in 1993.

it was great, sure it hurt like hell but you knew not to be stupid. if my kid was carrying on like a maniac, which if they were properly raised would never happen, i think the teacher should smack the crap out of them.

hell, if my kid was attacked by another kid at school (besides usual schoolyard tiffs) i would personally smack the crap out of them and their parents

Doctor
"let me get this straight, you dont want to discipline your child but you want him to behave"

Beatnik
"Yeah doc, help us, we are all out ideas and we've tried nothing"

  ADD?
I want to know if this was always around or if it's a product of the modern society. It kind of bugs me on how quick people are to say a kid has a disorder or complex now.

I never got into much trouble at school mostly because a fight on the playground led to some serious punishment at home.

variable, I think there was a Simpson episode with something like that.

  ADD
is a relatively new "diagnosis".. it started out with "hyperactivity", which I was "diagnosed" with in the early 70's, and has now matured into ADD.. the issue here is that school districts get more funding for every "special needs" child, so it's in their best interests to have children labelled as ADD.. dope the kids up with Ritalin, at the parents expense, and then the problem is solved, you have pliable calm children and you have extra money for the school district.. it's a win-win situation..

  reason for rating
The last paragraph was confusing to read due to the lack of commas, or pausing punctuation.

Also, im pretty sure there was a missing comma in the first paragraph.

Because your news was very well written otherwise, I was hesitant to give you a bad rating. So i deemed it "moderate".

this story doesnt have enough detail
No one knows what happened here. I was kicked out of school at this boy’s age because of a similar incident. I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone ... I had problems with anger and would loose control... I couldn’t help it. I didn’t try to hurt ... I was trying to escape being restrained. All I was thinking about was getting away and if someone got in the way of my flailing there was a possibility of them getting hit. This story isn't complete enough for people to be going off on the boy or on his parents because there could be a much bigger problem causing this action. I do agree though that blaming everything on ADD isn’t the answer either... what we need to do is figure out why our kids have so many pressures and problems. If you think childhood is the best time of life ... maybe you should think again.

  He got what he deserved...
"Johnny Lee Morris was arrested in September for felony assault on an officer"
At that age the only thing a kid can get confused with about a cop is Police Man, or Police Officer. They down right know they're to serve and protect, so obviously the kid was way out of control to hit an officer, and couldn't be restrained any other way. You have to remember, cops are scared to touch little kids, mainly because as soon as they do, the public flames "PEDOPHILE!", so the pigs wouldn't physically restrain him unless necessary. I remember when I had my run-ins with the law at a young age, I knew enough to shut the hell up and do whats to be expected of you, which is cooperate.
Ritalin is not the answer to ADD. ADD is a result of the parents failing to raise a child properly. Somewhere, they screwed up with the eric eriksons 8 stages of development, or maslows hierarchy of needs. Telling kids drugs will help them out at a young age will turn into major problems when they're older.

Officers should have smacked the little kid
With a goddamn night stick, all this softly softly bullshit is raising a nation of wusses and kids who think they can get away with anything.
