Cholesterol Drugs May Cut Cancer Risk

 

An early study into the cholesterol-lowering statin drugs has found that the drug may also cut the risk of colon cancer by 50%. The risk was cut even in those study participants who had a family history of colon cancer, as well as other risk factors.

The study was published in this weeks New England Journal of Medicine. Statins such as Crestor, Pravachol, Lipitor and Zocor have also been found to cut the risk of Alzheimer’s and osteoprosis. However, experts warn against overenthusiasm.

Ernest Hawk from the US National Cancer Institute said: We don't know who should take them [for cancer prevention], what dosage is needed, and how long people should stay on them…"
