Australian Woman Guilty of Smuggling Drugs to Indonesia

Schapelle Corby has been found guilty of smuggling 9 pounds (4.1 kg.) of Marijuana into Indonesia. She has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Corby maintains her innocence, and her legal team said the Indonesian government threw out key evidence, including a statement from a convict stating Corby was a unwitting "drug mule".

The verdict has caused strain between Australian and Indonesian relations, with threats against Indonesian diplomatic missions in Australia, and in Indonesia.

This type of thing was the subject of a movie once. Sucks for her if she didn't do it.

  They should of waited

until she gets to the drop point. Cops are normally smarter then this, they want the drugs, AND the money for the drugs, greedy bastards...

  IT WAS PLANTED

For all you who dont know about the case she obviously did not do it. The HUGE bag the drugs were in was never finger printed, never identified as pot from Australia either. Also why the hell would she take pot into Indonesia?
ITS WORTH MORE THAN 8 TIMES THE SELLING AMOUNT IN AUSTRALIA.
Now I have never been in favour of drug dealers, but even if she was a dealer, she would sell it where she gets the most money, why would she risk the death penilty for 8 time LESS money than she could get locally? This case is a farking farce and the Indonesians are a currupt bunch. I never used to harber ill will towards them and even donated when they had the bali bombings, and with the tsunami. Now i wish i could get my money back.

The Judge has NEVER found anyone innocent. For his entire career its only ever been guilty, sound strange no? Corrupt bastard.

The whole case made no sense

Firstly if you're going to smuggle drugs into a country which often applies the death penalty to drug convictions are you going to just take a bit of marijuana? Sure - let's risk our lives to smuggle something that will make a loss rather than a profit.

There was no video footage, security or otherwise, available from either the airport she arrived at or departed from.

The bag containing the marijuana was barely even concealed and was NEVER FINGERPRINTED.

Baggage handlers that were on duty the day that Corby left Australia have been implicated in drug smuggling using passengers bags to transport the drugs.

There are several more holes but I don't feel like typing them out. I personally see reasonable doubt. I also foresee very few Australians holidaying in Bali from now on.

  Nation Divided

Its really interesting. I've talked to plenty of people about it and there seems to be two groups of people. Those who are really angry about it and those who basically say what can you do.

The Angry people are angry at two main things. They are angry at the Australian government because they think the gov did nothing. They seem to forget that Indonesia is not part of Australia and so we cant affect the judicial system. They are also angry at indonesia because the bali bomber got 2 years and she got 20. The funny thing is that all the angry people want Australia to boycott Indonesia.

Fortunatley they are the vocal minority.

The majority of Australians seem to think that while the situation is sad, there isnt much we can do for her by getting all upset and being crazy. Hopefully she can be transfered to an Australian prison.

All in all, hopefully it makes everyone (esp the angry people) realise just how fortunate we are to live in a counrty like Australia.

>> She did it. Let her rot in jail

You obviously have been following the case.
Hope your fingers rot off...
You should of seen what happened to her...

  i'm certain it was planted.

as has been pointed out by others here, for simple reasons of money you would not take a drug to a country where it sells for 8 times less than the country your in. taking into consideration the money (or lack of) you wouldn't risk a death sentance for smuggling unless you had been "sampling the product" before hand.

  @ neester

I followed up on the story, which was plastered all over CNN Headlin news overnight. Man or man, did she get royally screwed. I'm reasonably certain in my own opinion that she likely didn't have anything to do with it. There's no was a babe like that will survive in a Indonesian prison. Never again will I knowingly purchase anything coming from Indonesia. Frankly, I hope they get another tsunami up the ass.

then why did you say "she did itlet her rot in jail"...??

 by: neester   05/29/2005 02:53 AM
  Personally..

I don't think she did it. I would have been worth more to sell it in Australia, and as was already mentioned, the bag was never fingerprinted. Nor would they allow it to be teasted to figure out it's origin. With the way the judges just dismissed everything the defence said, I'm thinking they either wanted to make an 'example' out of her, or the drugs actually belonged to a high-rank official...

  Drug War

this moronic drug war is causing too many problems. If politicians really cared about the well-being of their citizens this 'drug war' would be scrapped.

For Indonesia, they clearly have a retarded, inhumane policy. There is no reason to sentence someone any jailtime for that. They act like there isn't already weed in Indo, cmmon, it comes cheap and abundant.

Those bastards rely on Aussies for tourism, I'd be glad to see many Aussies stop going there and force that government to bitch up and let her go

  It's

unfortunate if she didn't do it but these are the type of risks you take when visiting places Indonesia or Malaysia.
I don't like the way Australian's are sympathising for her. I think it's because she was a beauty queen (even though she's rather unattractive)they feel sorry for her.
If it was just some normal girl or aussie guy no-one would care.

She was at the wrong place at the wrong time and the Indonesian government has evry right to punish her under their laws.

And with a name like that she should be locked away! lol

You Ozzies ought to mount an attack on the prison where she is being kept.... this is highly offensive to civilized nations.

I like Indonesia only for the Wayang. The rest of it-- muslim, et. all. bah.

Some places will never ready for the 20th century, nor the 21st.
