14-Year-Old Boy Steals Airplane

A 14-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after stealing a Cessna from the Fort Paine, Alabama, airport and taking it for a joyride. He took off and landed twice, but the last landing was too hard and the landing gear collapsed, damaging the plane.

The teenager was in the air for at least 30 minutes and had never flown a plane before. He received minor injuries from his rough landing. The keys had been left in the plane.

“We’ve never had a problem before with planes being stolen, so I guess we have been a little lax in our security,” said Larry Noble Cowart who owns the plane. The boy was charged with theft and taken to juvenile detention.

@ morons that blame video games
They seem to forget that someday the military will be using far more unmanned aircraft and the alike.
Who’s going to fly them if not gamers!

I wonder what he was thinking.
I certaily hope it wasn't "I'm sure I'll get away with this."

Does GTA let you steal planes? That would be really cool.

  I blame M$
They have that flight simulator game...could have brainwashed that poor kid's mind!

But really though, I hope this kid gets to pay for ALL the damages, go to counciling, and maybe some time in club fed for kids would give him some time to sit down.

Yes it does. I haven’t completed the new one yet but, you have at least 3 planes+ helicopters.
San Andreas is the best game in a long time!!!

Did anyone call the Dept of Homeland Security?
This kid may be a terrorist training to fly airplanes into buildings. It wouldn’t be the first time this was done. Have they done a background check on his library card yet? Did they lock up everyone he knows and torture them for info yet? Put this kid in a cell next to Joseph Padia and hold him incommunicado for the next 4 years at least.

J/K our government wouldn’t really do something like that...would they?

a 14 year can steal a plane now and the security is better?... i as a canadian am laughing my ass off, bush boosting better security and a 14 year old boy steals

i say give him proper training, the first time he landed it he didn't damage the plane, i'd say thats quite exceptional.

Don't Blame MS, all they did was provide a sim that has been out since the C-64 days (I had it). The sim is very good, you can learn the instrument training from there and can really learn to fly. The problem is that the kid needs to know right from wrong and what he did was wrong. He was not taking a 14,000 dollar car for a joyride, he was taking a 100,000 dollar ( or even more )PLANE for a joy ride. He should have been charged as an adult for this crime. He could take houses with this joy ride of his. Taking anything that doesnt belong to him is wrong. He may have done 10,000 dollars in damage to the airplane if he screwed the engine up ( my brother in law spent 10grand for an engine over haul on his plane). After 9/11 this is no laughing matter, But is cool that he didnt kill himself.

Here's a couple of pictures of the plane. I'd said it's totaled:

  35,000 Dollars
I hope they make him pay for that plane. He lucky that it was an older plane. If was never he really would be up shit creek, then again, I dont have 35,000 dollars to spend. I am sure the insurance will pay for it, but I would make sure to get some money from the kid or parents.

  give him a military rank!!!
If he can fly a plane by just reading abook, then he's better off than most of our Army's chopper pilots! Make him a Capt, and let him fly F-14's,lol.
That is after he gets out of Juvy.
