Boy Dies after Computer Game Marathon

Having played computer games for twelve hours straight, a Russian boy came home. His mother found his erratic behavior disturbing enough that she called an ambulance. Doctors placed the boy in an intensive care unit.

The boy spent almost seven weeks fighting for life before succumbing to stroke. Pathologists had revealed that the boy's brain had been affected by cerebral pathologies.

Russian doctors think that sitting long hours in front of computers without food, water and rest are as dangerous to a young body as alcohol and drug abuse. The damage is exacerbated by the psychological disorders, split personality and depression.

  Substitute X for Gaming...

Yes, and doctors giving opinions for long hours without food, rest etc. would experience the exact same thing.

Sheesh

  I've done that

was on Everquest for about that long. And I know a guy who was logged on for 24 hours. He grabbed some instant food and sodas while playing though.

  More than meets the eye

There is more going on here obviously. I have played Asheron's Call for 16 hours per day for weeks at a time and sometimes longer without issue. Perhaps there was a genetic or environmental defect not detected.

  Where were the parents?

I cannot believe the parents did not notice he was gone that long. On the other hand, if one of my son's friends comes by, after a few hours, I would probably send him on his merry way, like two hours, maybe less.

  WOW

Dead!
I really need to lay off GTA: San Andreas and UT2k4 then!

That's stupid any LAN party I have ever been to has gone for at least 10 hours usually a lot longer.
Of course we took little breaks and had lots food and drink.

  I've gone 30 hours

I've worked in front of a computer doing nothing but continous work for 30 hours at 100 wpm, or do the two day gaming thing at lan party's XD, of course never without food and music

  Ridiculous

i have sympathy for the family but playing a game for 12 hours straight with no food or water? i've never played a game that was that good its kind of ridiculous people do this type of stuff to themselves. As for this happening from watching tv not likely playing games uses more brain power and physical activity then watching tv does.

  haha @ starshadow

i played an old game the other day called zak something and the alien mind benders (im not good with old game names) but 10 minutes of that is as good as 3 days it was horrible

  2 words: Final Fantasy.

Ive stayed up playing no.7 for countless hours without food (I did get up for water). Missed 2 days of sleep playing it.

The report is missing something. He must of had something wrong with him to begin with.

  by: Vistrix   06/22/2005 10:24 AM
  maybe

he already had like anemia or something, cause 12 straight hours ain't that bad.

  by: Meltman   06/22/2005 08:16 PM
  Oh yeah!

Once i stayed up for 10 days straight with not food, water or sleep and im fine, oh it was a LONG time ago sure, i was playing, ahhh PONG.

Seriously though, don't make a competition out of it. Last time i recalled it is a bad thing to sit there for days playing games. Obviously the boy must have gotten unlucky somewhere along the line or had done it just a wee bit too much

  I had a friend

who's little brother was so addicted to MUDding that he would relieve himself while still sitting at the computer. MUDding people. Text. Imagine if the game had graphics and sound. Scary.

  some reasoning

The kid was most likely playing at a internet cafe, where its pay by the hour. He can't just get up and get a drink or something to eat.

  by: refazk   06/24/2005 03:03 PM
12 hours without food and water...

Does that have an effect on the "cerebral pathologies"? I mean, that's really not a long time without food and water. I slept for 12 hours before. I lived after the next 7 weeks. And... I'm sure he was well-fed while in the hospital.

So, yeah, evidentally the product of death wasn't one 12 hour marathon. More like... constant 12-hour marathoning throughout his young life.

Anyway, back to gaming. God I'm hungry.

  OK wellllll......MUDS`

I play muds and yes iv spent over 48 hours straight no food/water/sleep and thats because its addicting and you get all interested in whats gona happen next that you forget about everything outside your little bubble

I am the same way with WoW and Counter STRIKE iv done full 3-5 days nonstop and i have never had any problems before so he either was sick/mentallychallenged/disabled in some way before the fact because i only get tired and ill just sleep for like half a day then get right back on it and do it like its nothing and yes i still do it to this day iv been doing it since i was 9 and im now 18 and doctors say im in perfect health and my eyesight is great so idk i dont think its game related maybe he did eat something and it justdidnt agree with him/ or something cause i dont think the game could do that to him....
