Pieces Fall Off Discovery During Launch

NASA officials reviewing launch footage from the launch of space shuttle Discovery have observed what is believed to be a piece of thermal tile break off Discovery during liftoff. The tile hit the shuttle near the sensitive nose wheel area.

Additionally, an object - perhaps a piece of foam insulation, seemed to fly off the tank, missing the shuttle on its way. The shuttle also hit a bird on its way up.

NASA flight operations manager John Shannon says that it is unknown at this time if these incidents pose any danger to the shuttle. The traditional post launch party has been called off.

  ohhhh, the poor bird...

Just waiting for the liberal poophead media to show more concern for the bird than the lives of the asternauts

  Yeah..

You're right, sounds like a law suit :-)

Seriously though, imagine the odds of being hit by a space shuttle. If the bird had left home just a split second later, or if the wind had shifted just a tiny bit at any time while the bird was in flight, it would have missed. If NASA had been given the task of purposely hitting a bird with the shuttle they would never have been able to do so.

This is the type of event that makes you think a bit on fate and the butterfly effect. I wonder if the bird had time to reflect on that.
