Disney to Shut Down Australian Animation Studio

Sidney, Australia- 250 employees of Walt Disney Co. were informed of dismissal as their animation department shuts down. Disney has been closing animation branches around the world in countries such as Japan, Canada, and the USA.

These closures are occurring as Disney begins a new phase of opening studios in countries such as India, seeking 'to to choose the most appropriate and efficient animation process.', as reported in an official statement from the company.

The company will provide the employees with 'generous' benefits and assist in them in finding new work. The Sydney studio contributed to such films as Lion King II, Jungle Book II, and Lady and the Tramp II.

  You'll notice I didn't call them 'classics'...
yeah- the cheaper they can produce these things... the more they can charge in the store. I don't understand the logic there, but it seems to work for them. (well, for the Disney execs, not the animators...)

  Out Sourced to India,, Again
Man, I wounder what they are being paid. On call centers it is like 2 dollars an hour. I dont know what the base pay of a animator is, but they must be getting of half what the people that are losing their jobs get.

  Animator salaries
Since the glory days of the original Lion King, the average modern animator make half of what animators made back then.... and Disney still gives them the shaft.

But, I guess hand-drawn vs. computer is a cutthroat business. The computer animators are making less and less every year. Now they make a rather modest average salary like most working-class folks, instead of the jaw-dropping $90,000 out of art-school paychecks they used to take home.
