New Technology GPS Satellite Launched

The first of a new generation of Global Positioning System satellites was launched aboard a Delta 2 rocket on Sunday. The Lockheed Martin-built satellite has better protection against jamming, stronger signal strength and also has more frequencies.

“I think this it’s a pretty huge step,” said Col. Allan Ballenger, of the GPS Program. “The military has been using two frequencies from day one of GPS. This will be first time that we are adding a second frequency for civilian users.”

  A he?? of a mess...
With all those satellites turning around, and the next Galileo constellation of european GPS-like system coming up, i wonder how they don't all crash in one another. When you think about all the pieces of broken spacecrafts, telecommunications satellites, lost tools, it must be a real mess up there. Soon it'll be messier than Earth itself...

  not to worry
I have worked with Lockheed Martin in a couple of projects and the quality of their work is bellow sub-standard. I wouldn't be surprised these satellites stop working withtin the first 24 hours of operation hahaha.

Seriously, watching this company work is like watching a 3-stooges episode.

  Space Trash
Space trash does not stay in space forever. Just like any satellite, if these objects do not have any means of maintaining their orbits, such as maneuvering rockets, their orbits will eventually decay and they will burn up in the atmosphere. There is quite a bit of "space trash" up there, but not as much as a previous posting implied. Over time, everything in space will comply with Newton's Law. If it goes up, it must come down.

  However
most orbits are designed to last more than 100 years.
It is actualy starting to get fairly crowded, or its at least impinging on easy paths, bare in mind these things are set and cant really be changed.
