Kenyan Takes US Citizenship Oath, Wins $1,89 Million Lottery

Moses Bittok from Des Moines, IA took his citizenship oath on Friday and then discovered he had won Iowa Lottery's Hot Lotto game. You adopt "a country and [it nets] you $1.8 million," he said. "Only in America."

He bought the ticket at a grocery store he once worked and checked it two days after the drawing at a gas station. He remained calm but his wife, Leonida, screamed.

They chose 25 payments of $52,920 per year after taxes. and want to fund their 4 year old daughter's college education

He used to work at a convienience store, which alone should make you a bit suspect. But that he wins the lottery directly after getting his US Citizenship... Too convienient

  it doesnt matter
by the time his kid is ready for collage, it will cost as much as he won.. ;-)

  well
The things are all handled electronically now. You can't send in a ticket after the drawing has occured. This is why after every drawing the lottery knows how many people won, and at what stores the tickets were bought.

  He's not that clever...
 ....52,920 x 25 = 1,323,000 (inc. tax deduction)
Without even thinking of inflation wouldn't it be better to take the lump sum and invest it?

  probably....
smarter to take the lump sum and make an investimate in an IRA or something and still have a job so that your money you won would be collecting crazy intrest.

or to invest in a business you are sure will succeed.

He is right tho, you only hear these kind of stories from America, what a great place to live :) (yes, even with its problems, it's still the best game in town).

  yep, you cant fake
 these things.

The problem with a lump sum, is you pay half of it in tax.
And you dont get the 1323000, you get whatever 25 bonds that would earn that money over the 25 years costs.
Had he taken the 1.89million, he would have actualy recieved about 700,000 there and then.

You arestill preobably better off getting the lump sum, just dont buy a bloody ferrai.

I'd have taken the lump sum
The yearly payouts, would only work out for us in the UK at £2k pm which is nice you know... but you won't exactly be living la vida loca...

I'd have taken the lump sum £350k and bought a nice 4 bedroom house somewhere, invest the rest.

  "Only in America"... hell no...
A French jobless man of north african origin won last week the sum of 70 million euros at the EuroMillion Lottery (a bit more than 80 million bucks...). I'm talking about millionS, not thousands. Even nicer : this earning is not taxable. Only if it is invested in housing, bank accounts with interests, etc, then it will be taxable.
America the best place to live? lick my a*s... Just the best place to get shot at... after Irak.
