Vatican Schooling in Exorcism

"Exorcism and the Prayer of Liberation," a four month course, is being taught to about 120 priests at Pontifical Regina Apostolorum University outside of Rome. Aspiring demonologists and exorcists will hear lectures from real, well known exorcists.

"Not all of you will become exorcists but it is indispensable that every priest knows how to discern between demonic possession and psychological problems," Father Paolo Scarafoni told students. Topics include spiritual, medical, and legal issues.

The Vatican updated its exorcism ritual in 1999, and it is estimated that up to 5,000 Satanic cultists exist in Italy, mostly 17-25 year olds. Real exorcists, such as Father Gabrial Nanni, say there are signs to tell possession from mental problems.

at least the perfered Catholic exorsim rituals revolve around praying a whole lot and the liberal use of holy water.

Not biting of children's noses and drinking their blood.

  sounds like they're rational
actually, the church is very skeptical of reports of miracles and possessions. only when no scientific explanation is given do they attribute the cause of the phenomenon to be a spiritual one. there are many valid scientists who are employed by the vatican to contribute a scientific view. to put the vatican in context, it has a more respectful disposition to science than the current administration in america.

  I agree
I actually thought that the Vatican had pretty much done away with the idea of exorcisms, but maybe that's just an idea that Hollywood propagated. I was fascinated reading this story, because I simply had no idea that they taught this specifically, to say nothing of the broad scope. Ah, to be a fly on the wall in that room...

  i would have thought.....
.. that they would teach this sort of thing, if for no other reason, than simply debunking the nutcases, no?

I guess if you believe you can talk to god
you have to believe someone is posessed by the devil....

besides it is a good way to keep people in line... the threat of the devil being able to posess you...

see dedolitos link above - if the devil didnt posess them then what? They were just psychotic nutcases?

oh and dedolito they bit off the girls nose while they were posessed and before they were taken to be exorcized.

I like the cops quote: we werent sure what to charge them with...? What can you do about someone biting off their child's nose if they were posessed at the time? I wonder if that would work for a speeding ticket...

You cant give me a ticket officer I am being posessed by the devil <heave> ooops sorry bout that vomit there Mr. Policeguy... hey what are you doing with those cuffs?

"I guess if you believe you can talk to god you have to believe someone is posessed by the devil"

sorry, i don't see the connection between the two ideas you're trying to link.

"besides it is a good way to keep people in line... the threat of the devil being able to posess you"

i disagree, posession doesn't happen to only unruly people. thusly, you can't make people behave nicely by threatening them with posession.

also, i really don't think the intention is mind control, and if it was it wouldn't work too well. this is due to the simple fact that i've never heard anyone say "oh i better not steal that car or i'll be posessed by the devil". however, i have heard people say "i better not say anything too bad about bush since our phone conversation might be monitored". if you're talking about control, our government is a far greater threat. dont worry, the catholics. we haven't owned the world for a couple hundred years. all hail the wasps and their paper gods!

I wonder why that didn't turn up when I was searching for keywords...

I guess Yahoo must have gotten the scoop a little late (say, 8 months). I will argue the merit of this submission, however, on the grounds that most of the details differ from those published by ganjaman, though both submissions involve the same class.

If you honestly believe the devil is just a fabrication and demonic posession is a way to keep the population in line than keep that thought up and see where you end up in a few years, just a though.
