The Honda Motor Co. has announced that it will be developing diesel engines for light-duty vehicles in the United States. The already-existing diesel engines that Honda has for Europe do not meet emission rules in the US.
Honda CEO Takeo Fukui said that the engines will be available "in the near future". So far, Honda Accords are equipped with a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel in Europe, and Fukui would not say what size engines would be available in the US.
He did say, though, that "Looking at Honda's lineup, for the smaller, more compact cars, it should be hybrids. But for the larger ones, it would be more toward environmentally friendly diesel."
