11 Dead in Fire at Amsterdam Airport

A fire has ripped through a prison at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport today, killing at least 11 illegal immigrants who had been waiting to be deported and injuring 15 others, according to local authorities.

A spokesperson for Holland's Immigration Service said: "They were illegal aliens waiting to be extradited to their countries of origin. We are still busy trying to confirm their identities." Some of those being held have escaped.

The fire raged for three hours in the early hours of this morning. It began just after midnight. Approximately 350 people were being held in the prison at the time of the fire.

Did not know there was a prison there. There is a really cool place that serves fresh fruit and icecream smoothies though...

  Most do

Most ports of entry, especially large ones, have some kind of detention facility. That way they can hold people who's paperwork isn't checking out or who are on wanted lists as they process through. This particular airport may have something in addition to that system though.
