Police Chief Defends 'Shoot-to-Kill'

Sir Ian Blair (UK Met) defended the Metropolitan Police from attacks of them being "Trigger Happy" with statistical data, SO19 officers opened fire once in every 2,000 incidents that they attended.

This comes as a backlash from the killing of Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes as he run towards the Tube from the outside as the police where hunting for terrorists on the underground, he was shot repeatedly.

Sir Ian Blair said these actions did not permit the widening of the powers because the criminal law had always allowed reasonable force to be used and that had not changed, but did recognize that public debate on the issue of lethal force is needed.

  Actually...
It's been debated wether or not he ran.

His mother/ a relative said that he stopped to pick up a paper. It has also been said that he only ran for the train once he was inside, and near the train. Other sources have confirmed these

Also, "Eyewitnesses" reported by the BBC were false, for example "wires coming out of his belt", which was untrue.

He was taken to the ground and shot 5 times in the head in front of a carriage full of passengers.

  Even if that is true
The police would still have told him to stop before shooting, and given the situation at the time running was a stupid thing to do.

  But still....
It was a time where everybody was hyped up and scared. As much as I hate to say it, the policeman didnt really have a choice. The policeman who shot him may have had people screaming down his ear to shoot him, he may have thought that he really did have a bomb, things like that.

To be honest, there are so many accounts of what happened, how can we be sure what actually went on? They may not have shouted, he may not of heard etc etc.

  The running bit
needs to be removed or modified. That is inaccurate and not in the source.

  The Flip Side
Here's the thing. Had he a bomb, had he blown himself up and killed lots and lots of poeple, everyone would be asking why the police didn't do something. It was a lose-lose situation from the start. Not oen of us really understands what happened there, what the police orders were. how the suspect was reqacting, etc. We only get second hand reports. I've had police point a gun at me. I've been held under suspicion until they've found the right person. And everytime, while my life gets discombobulated for it, I know they're only trying to do what is right to protect the majority of people. Give your cops a break. they're not the trigger happy jerks the media makes them out to be.
